Two games, a pair of overtime battles, one win.

Newtown High School’s field hockey team, already coming off consecutive one-goal battles against Masuk of Monroe, earned a 1-0 overtime victory at New Fairfield on September 21, then settled for a scoreless tie at New Milford two days later.

Against New Fairfield, the Nighthawks won the coin toss to get possession of the ball in overtime and that paid off. The Hawks went directly down the field and created a penalty corner in less than a minute. Brooke Buckley inserted the ball to Summer Harrell who sent a powerful drive into the goal and sealed the win.

Riley Alesevich had a great day in goal with six saves, and also cleared loose balls out of the circle before New Fairfield could get to them, Newtown Coach John Savage said.

The New Milford game was the first of two in as many games, but five days apart, between the South-West Conference rivals who were to meet in Newtown on Wednesday.

“Both teams played well and turned out to be a defensive battle — difference was our inability to create offensive opportunities and the number of times we fouled giving New Milford more possessions. Fortunately this game was not a league game,” said Savage, whose team’s first meeting counted only in the state standings whereas the rematch impacts the SWC seedings.

After that second New Milford matchup, the Hawks host Bethel Friday, September 30 at Treadwell Park, starting at 4 pm.
