Burglary/Larceny

Police are investigating a burglary/larceny that occurred at a Poverty Hollow Road home located near that street’s intersection with Greenleaf Farms Road.

Police learned on the afternoon of September 27, that someone entered the basement and stole approximately 136 feet of copper piping. There was no sign of forced entry.

Anyone with knowledge of the crime is asked to contact the town police detective unit at 201-426-5841.

Dodgingtown Collision

About 7:42 am on September 27, motorist William Martin, 54, of Bethel was driving a 2003 Jeep SUV southward on Dodgingtown Road, near its intersection with Rooster Ridge Road, when the vehicle collided with a deer, police said.

The deer ran off into the woods. Martin was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

DUI Arrest

Police report that motorist Matthew Gray, 23, of Plantsville was observed crossing over the road’s center lines on Hawleyville Road, near its intersection with Mt Pleasant Road, about 12:46 am on September 29.

Police stopped Gray to investigate and then charged him with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right.

After processing the case, police released Gray on $50 bail for an October 13 court appearance.

Fairfield Hills Incident

At about 10:20 pm on September 26, police received a report concerning suspicious activity at Fairfield Hills, so they went there to investigate.

Police said they located Samantha Oritz, 21, of Cumming, Ga., there and then learned that she was wanted on a warrant held by Trumbull police.

Police charged Ortiz with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving with a suspended vehicle registration, and driving with an inoperable tail lamp.

After processing, police released Ortiz on $500 bail for an October 8 appearance in Bridgeport Superior Court.

Shoplifting

Police are investigating a shoplifting case at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street in which an unidentified male and female stole 12 cans of powdered infant formula from the store and then left the area at about 9:52 pm on September 25.

Patrol Officer John McCluskey, who is investigating the theft, asks anyone with information on the matter to contact him at the police station at 203-426-5841.

 

Tractor-Trailer

Richard Zyrlis, 57, of Guilford was driving a tractor-trailer truck in the parking lot at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street on September 21, when the truck struck a traffic island and a stop sign, police said.

Zyrlis had been attempting to make a right turn near the Bank of America when the accident occurred.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

South Main Crash

About 6:14 pm September 28, motorist Douglas Fink, 45, of Monroe was driving a 2001 Nissan sedan southward on South Main Street and then attempted to make a right turn onto Orchard Hill Road, but the Nissan skidded on the South Main Street pavement, police said.

Southbound motorist Dawn Roman, 46, of 14 Pastor’s Walk, who was driving a 1998 Plymouth sedan, then attempted to stop, but skidded on the South Main Street pavement and struck the rear end of the Nissan.

There were no injuries. Police issued Roman a written warning for following too closely.

Rear-End Accident

Motorist Beatriz Sandoval, 64, of Milford, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet sedan southward on South Main Street near its intersection with Swamp Road about 3:47 pm September 28, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Paola Donoso, 25, of Monroe, who was driving a 1994 Honda sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Donoso received a written warning for following too closely.
