Newtown Continuing Education announced it has limited openings available in the following classes. Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787 for further information or to express interest in a program.

Creative Card Making: A four-class course, starting on October 7, for a $74 fee, will teach attendees how to get creative with rubber stamps, embellishments, and techniques.

Over the four weeks a variety of cards for all occasions will be covered, including greeting cards and matching gift bags. Attendees will make cards with embossing, layering, glitter, cutouts, and shaped cards. All card stock and embellishments will be provided. A materials fee of $35 is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Introduction to the Art of Drawing: A five-class course, starting October 7, for a $99 fee, will offer beginners the fundamentals in drawing and give those who have not drawn in a long time the opportunity to brush up on their drawing skills.

A student supply list includes newsprint or cheap drawing paper, tracing paper, drawing pencils, white erasure, vine charcoal or a square Char-Kole, and gray kneadable artist eraser. The instructor will supply flood lights, electrical cords, still life items, and small pieces of chamois for $3 each.

The class is limited to 12 students.

Clutter Therapy: Living An Organized Life: A one-time class on Tuesday, October 7, for a $29 fee.

Get organized with professional organizer Karen Pierce, who will guide and inspire course attendees through the process of going from chaos to calm.

Women and Money: A one-time class, also on Tuesday, October 7, for $29, will offer women the opportunity to discuss financial topics that affect everyone. This class is for women of all ages, and with all levels of financial knowledge.

The steps needed to chart a financial course to provide a clear and specific path to financial peace of mind will be discussed. Specific products or investments will not be discussed, but the course will review how women may take a more active role in financial decisionmaking. The top five mistakes most women make in their financial life will also be covered.

LinkedIn for Business: A one-time class on Wednesday, October 8, for a $39 fee, will help attendees leverage the power of LinkedIn for business.

Students will learn specific techniques and strategies on how to leverage LinkedIn to build business relationships, and maximize the site’s capabilities. The course will teach how to connect with prospects; create a search engine optimization (SEO) profile to be easily found; utilize group members and discussions; create a strong network of professionals; and develop LinkedIn marketing plans for individual ad sales teams that drive business and ultimately revenue. Students should set up their LinkedIn account before attending class.

Windows 8: A one-time class on Wednesday, October 8, for a $29 fee. Attendees will learn how to use Microsoft’s newest and latest operating system. A demonstration on Windows 8 will be offered during the class.

Excel Part 1: A three-class course, starting Thursday, October 9, for an $89 fee. Attendees will learn the ability to work with rows and columns of information using Microsoft Excel. Learn to use one of the most powerful spreadsheet programs on the market today. Using Microsoft Excel 2010, learn to design and use spreadsheets, formulas, functions, number, date and text formatting, sorting, and many more features.

Basic computer skills are required.

iThings, Beyond the Basics 2: A two-class course, starting Tuesday, October 14, for a $59 fee, will explore the capabilities of handheld devices and short cuts for usage. The course will focus on using  the iPad, an iPod, and iPhone.

Attendees will learn how to utilize Siri, the control panel, Safari, and apps.

Attendees are asked to bring their own device. A beginner course is suggested for those who are new to using their devices.

What Are You Eating? A one-time class, on Wednesday, October 15, for a $39 fee, will teach how food impacts health.

Some foods put weight on. Other foods are heart, bone, and brain healthy. Attendees will learn what to look for when shopping in the grocery store. Topics will include fish oil and fats that are heart healthy, which carbohydrates to avoid when losing weight and why eating protein is so important.
