Big Y Scholarships Top One Million Mark

Anthony Altieri of Sandy Hook and Jennifer Staple were among more than 250 college students who are settling in for a new school year with a little help from Big Y World Class Markets.

Big Y’s Scholarship Program reflects its corporate commitment to education and is considered to be one of the most competitive in New England, drawing thousands of applications each year. Since the program was founded in 1981, more than $1 million has been awarded to more than 2,000 students. “Reaching the one million dollar mark is a major milestone in Big Y’s efforts to make a difference in the communities surrounding our stores by rewarding academic excellence in our schools,” said Donald H. D’Amour, Big Y chairman and CEO. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of these young people and encouraged in our own commitment to the growth and development of every Big Y employee.”

Applications are open to all of customers, customers’ dependents, employees, and employees’ dependents. A student’s permanent residence or school must be located within Connecticut, Norfolk County, and Massachusetts. Awards are given to students in the categories of high school, graduate, undergraduate, community college, graduate and nontraditional. In addition, a special category within the Big Y Scholarship programs honors dependents of the law enforcement officers and firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect and serve their communities. Awards are based on academic merit.

Scholarship applications for the 2004–2005 academic year will be available in all of Big Y’s 51 locations in mid-November. Additional information can be found by visiting bigy.com. Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2004.
