Bits & Pieces

By Kim J. Harmon

It seems pretty cut and dried to me, but if I win the Newtown Blue & Gold Booster Club raffle then I’m heading to the National Football League Pro Bowl.

Sure, any of the other events would be better – the Super Bowl, the NBA All Star game, the Major League All Star game, the NHL All Star game, the NCAA Final Fours, and even the Kentucky Derby, Ryder Cup, U.S. Open Tennis Tournament and Indy and Daytona 500s – but the NFL Pro Bowl has one thing those other events don’t have.

The best site in America.

Hawaii, baby!

I have been ranting and raving about what a great fan site Kyle Lyddy has created (it’s now known as www.nighthawknation.com), but cyberspace is getting LOADED with great Newtown High School stuff.

There is the NHS athletic department site at www.newtown.k12.ct.us/~straite/ that is a godsend to all of us who want up to the minute information on game postponements and cancellations. Then there is the NHS football site at www.nighthawkfootball.com, which features photos (and even some streaming video) of all the games.

Come spring, we will be able to visit www.baseball-teams.com/teams/nighthawkbaseball.com to get a fix on Newtown High School baseball.

So – fire up that computer.

Remember those insane throw-ins by Allison Frobey? Well, the people at Plymouth State have been getting a good look at those.

Frobey is a freshman back with the Plymouth State women’s soccer team. She has played in all five games for the 4-0-1 squad. She is part of a defense, which has allowed just two goals (one in a double overtime draw with Bridgewater State).

She is not the only Newtown High School graduate performing well on the collegiate soccer field. The others (like Mike Troy, Brian Miles, and Ryan Tracy) we will look in on in due time.

Man, oh man - my ears are still ringing!

When it comes to high school sports, there is certainly nothing more cacophonous than swimming.

Sure, lots of other venues - the basketball court, for instance - can get loud, but when there is a close meet (like there was on Tuesday) there is no place louder than a pool.

Excuse me, I think me phone is ringing.
