Huston Smith To Lead Seminar In Southbury

SOUTHBURY — Huston Smith will lead “The Enduring Truths of the Great Religions” the weekend of October 10-12, at Dolce Heritage Conference Center. The retreat will begin Friday evening at 7 and end on Sunday at noon.

The weekend is set up as an investigation into the inner dimensions of spirit and religion. Participants will explore the world’s enduring faiths and traditions, sifting through them as rich and textured databanks of the human spirit. Mr Huston will lead an exploration of mystical truths in light of our own lives, and how they are relevant to the current political and spiritual climate.

This is a time when the need for wisdom has never been greater. What can be done about the issues before us? Most of us know that we have to do something, but what is the right action? According to Mr Smith, an exploration of the truths held within the religions of the world will reveal the signposts and guides needed.

Huston Smith, who holds 12 honorary degrees, is an internationally recognized philosopher and scholar of religion. He has taught at Washington University, MIT, Syracuse University and the University of California Berkeley. His book The World’s Religions: Our Great Wisdom Traditions has been the most widely-used textbook on its subject for a third of a century.

Mr Smith is also the author of Why Religion Matters: The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief, Forgotten Truth: The Common Vision of the World’s Religions, The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred coauthored with Phil Cousineau, Cleansing the Doors of Perception, and other books in addition to over 80 articles in professional and popular journals

The seminar fee is $339.

The weekend is being sponsored by Miriam’s Well, a spiritual co-learning center in Saugerties, N.Y. Founded in 2000 by Susan and Richard Rosen, the center’s mission is to provide a space for people to gather with a teacher to have a deep and transformative experience, and to use the energy and inspiration from the weekends to take spiritual, environmental, and political action toward the causes and concerns about which they are the most passionate.
