Kavafian-Schub-Shifrin Trio Performance Will Be Followed By 30th Anniversary NFoM Reception

In the musical world of temperamental artists, it is rare that three distinguished soloists can come together to form a successful and happy touring ensemble. And it is even rarer that such an ensemble can take advantage of the extensive and brilliant chamber repertoire written for clarinet.

But occasionally it does happen,  as is the case of clarinet, violin and piano virtuosos David Shifrin, Ani Kavafian and Andre-Michel Schub, all of whom have performed as soloists with the major orchestras of the world. Newtown Friends of Music are pleased to announce the trio will perform the second of NFoM’s 2007-08 concert presentations on Sunday, October 14, at 3 pm, at Edmond Town Hall.

After 25 years of friendship and music-making, Ani Kavafian, Andre-Michel Schub and David Shifrin — each a true virtuoso and a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center — come together as a trio with undeniable chemistry. Combined they have performed with nearly every major orchestra around the world and in recital at the major concert halls.

Violinist Ani Kavafian, a guest on the Curtis Alumni Recital Series, is in great demand as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. Clarinetist David Shifrin has appeared in critically acclaimed recitals across the country and is a frequent orchestra soloist with major orchestras. As a piano recitalist, orchestra soloist and chamber musician, Andre-Michel Schub has been praised by critics and audiences since his career began almost three decades ago.

The chemistry that these friends of many years bring to the concert stage is immediately apparent in whatever they play.  Lauded for “formidable skill and easy intimacy” (Portland Oregonian), these three established and highly regarded chamber musicians will perform repertoire including Bach (Trio Sonata No. 2), Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio (Trio in E flat, K.498, 1786), Schumann’s Marchenerzahlungern (“Fairy Tales,” Opus 132, written just before his career-ending suicide attempt in 1854), and Bartok’s Contrasts (for violin, clarinet and piano, 1938).

This wonderful performance will be followed by a Gala 30th Anniversary Reception and Party in the Alexandria Room upstairs in Edmond Town Hall. All concert guests are invited. Plans are in the works to make the occasion truly memorable and mark three decades of successful concert seasons.

Tickets for this performance are $18 for adults and $16 for seniors. Students through grade 12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. The box office will open one hour before the start of the concert.

Parking is free behind Edmond Town Hall and the facility is handicap accessible with all seating providing excellent viewing and acoustics.

Brochures outlining the full NFoM concert season are available by writing to Newtown Friends of Music, PO Box 295, Newtown CT 06470-0295, or through the group’s website, NewtownFriendsOfMusic.org, where information is also available about the program, the music, the artists and their annual School Outreach Programs.
