Peterborough, N.H. –– A two-day auction featuring American and English furniture, fine art, sterling, clocks, Oriental rugs, original sporting art, sporting library, prints and firearms is being presented by the Cobbs on October 12-13.

Saturday’s auction will be highlighted by an oil on canvas birds-eye view of Walpole, N.H., entitled “Valley of the Connecticut” and signed A.C. Howland, along with a three-piece set of Argand lamps from a New York collector. The Argand lamp set was manufactured by Messenger of England and originally sold by Wm. E. Sttouitenburgh, New York.

A set of eight Chinese export reverse paintings on glass of the months of the year with a Rhode Island history will also be offered, as will a small elliptical front New England card table with pierced brackets and bookend inlay. Also to be sold will be a 1688 English court cupboard, Chinese export, along with coin and sterling silver by makers such as Tiffany and Stone.

Sunday’s auction will consist of a local family’s sporting collection, which includes a large sporting library, store catalogs, decoys, paintings, prints and taxidermy.

Highlighting this session will be an oil on canvas painting signed Phillip R. Goodwin entitled “Unexpected Game,” which carries a presale estimate of $50/70,000. Goodwin is considered to be one of America’s greatest illustrators of hunting, fishing and wildlife.

Another painting of note is an A. Lassell Ripley signed watercolor commissioned by former New Jersey Governor, US Senator and Ambassador to France, Walter Evans Edge. The watercolor depicts Edge while hunting at Sunnyhill Farm, Georgia, with his dogs.

One of the many late consignments is a Holland and Holland cased, 12 gauge shot gun.
