To Honor Volunteers

DANBURY — The American Cancer Society will honor volunteers of the society at the annual Volunteer Recognition Reception on Thursday, November 10, at 6:30 pm, at the Amber Room Colonnade.

Thirty-seven individuals and groups from Fairfield County will be recognized for their outstanding volunteer work in areas of advocacy, communications, community outreach, programs, services, and events. Additionally, the American Cancer Society will award three cancer survivors — Sherry Lonergan of Trumbell, Wayne Poulter of New Milford, and Jason Christopher of Norwalk — with the Courage Award. The Courage Award recognizes a cancer patient who demonstrates personal strength and courage in combating cancer and the multitude of issues surrounding the disease.

This year, the society will bestow Governor Jodi Rell with the Honorary Courage Award.

“As our neighbor and friend, Governor Rell’s cancer diagnosis and treatment at Danbury Hospital illustrated her fighting spirit. She brought the cancer issue to the front pages of our newspapers, into our homes and into the hearts of her admirers. No single event or issue has brought such awareness about the disease to our community or illustrated the strength and drive to conquer cancer,” said Michelle Wolf, area director of cancer control.

Open to the public, tickets for the buffet-style dinner reception and awards ceremony are $25 each. To reserve a seat contact Deirdre St Jacques at the American Cancer Society at 203-563-1509 or Deirdre.st.Jacques@cancer.org.
