Girls' Volleyball Team Finds Winning Touch
Newtown High School's girls' volleyball team won three of four matches and six of its last eight heading into Wednesday's visit to Bassick of Bridgeport. The Nighthawks improved to 6-5 overall.
The Nighthawks blanked Pomperaug of Southbury on September 30 and host Immaculate of Danbury each in the minimum three sets on October 2, then fell in four sets to visiting Stamford on October 3 before earning a four-set win, topping visiting Brookfield, on October 5.
In the win over Pomperaug, set scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-16. Jordan Kemp led the way with 16 kills, Darla Paul had eight kills, and Rylan Kennedy had five kills. Taylor Leighton racked up 22 assists. Newtown had 13 service aces behind five from Ava Ashla. Kennedy had seven digs.
Against Immaculate, the scores were 25-16, 25-20, 25-16. Paul had nine kills, Emma Kozek logged seven kills, and Mia Sullivan recorded six kills. Kennedy again had five aces as the Hawks had 13 as a team. Sullivan had four block assists.
Stamford prevailed 25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14. Paul, Kemp, and Kennedy each had eight kills. Leighton had 21 assists. Leah Botta had a dozen digs. Leighton and Kemp both recorded a trio of aces and Kennedy had two aces. Paul had four solo blocks to go along with two block assists.
NHS beat Brookfield in a hard-fought match after losing the first set; scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20. Kemp had ten kills, Sullivan six, and Kennedy five. Leighton logged 19 assists. Ashla, Kemp, and Botta all had four aces. Remy Plummer had four digs and Kennedy had three digs. Paul and Leighton both had two solo blocks.
