Silver Bridge, which spans the Lake Zoar section of the Housatonic River, linking Glen Road in Sandy Hook to River Road in Southbury, is scheduled to undergo more repair work as part of a major $4.47 million bridge rehabilitation project that began in 2015.

On Monday, October 17, a contractor performing work for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) will resume activity on the repair project, according to DOT.

The remaining repairs will last for several weeks, with completion of the bridge project expected to occur before Thanksgiving, which is November 24.

The repairs had been planned for earlier this year, but were delayed until now.

The planned repairs will require that shrouded traffic signals, which are positioned at both ends of the 300-foot-long bridge, be again activated to control alternating one-way traffic across the span while the planned repairs are underway.

The repair work will involve replacing a large steel gusset plate positioned beneath the bridge. Replacing the gusset plate will require that temporary support beams be placed upon one half of the bridge deck to distribute the bridge's load while the work is underway, according to DOT.

The bridge was built in 1936. Last year, workers cleaned, repaired, and repainted the intricate trusswork on the truss-arch span, changing its color from dark brown to light gray. Although it is not posted with route markers, the bridge carries State Route 816.

The DOT last made major improvements to the bridge in 1986. It is listed on the Connecticut Historic Inventory and is eligible for placement on the National Register of Historic Places.

McNamee Construction Corp of Lincolndale, N.Y., is doing the bridge renovation project for the DOT.
