To the Editor:

Local elections rarely generate widespread voter turnout, especially when the “top of the ticket” is running unopposed. Yet there are positions on the ballot that will be critical to guide the future of Newtown. It’s important to vote on November 5th.

Today, I write to endorse two very special, exciting candidates for Newtown’s Board of Education, Deborra Zukowski and Dennis Brestovansky. Both are pragmatic education supporters. Both are remarkably analytical, experienced, professional listeners who favor stronger local control to return our schools to the educational prominence enjoyed just a few years ago. Both are “difference-makers” that share a love for our community that transcends the political polarization that exists on today’s board.

Deb Z. is a wonderful, non-political breath of fresh air that will bring a nuts & bolts approach to our school board. A 17-year Newtown resident with two adult, Newtown High grads, she’s a lifelong-learner with a clear-head, great ears, and an analytical style of consensus building that brings life to the democratic process.

She’s a pillar of Newtown volunteerism, having served on eight commissions over 14 years. Deb’s a great choice to bring our BOE a boost of objectivity, accountability, and the fortitude to fight for our children and teachers.

Dennis B. first moved to Newtown in 1995, is married with four kids, all of whom attended K-12 in Newtown schools. He’s committed to quality schools and excellence for the future of Newtown. He has a uniquely powerful set of skills from managing budgets, to strategic planning; from teaching college, to serving on charitable and private-sector boards of directors.

If you think our BOE can use a collaborative, outcomes-driven, strategic goal-setter, Dennis is your best choice to move us forward.

Please, meet the candidates and vote on November 5th!

Respectfully,

Mitch Bolinsky

State Representative
