Newtown Lions Club is planning its Fourth Annual Model Train Show event, to benefit childhood cancer research, on Sunday, October 25, from 10 am-2 pm. The special event will again be presented at Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street.

There will be fun and games as well as model railroad layouts for all ages to enjoy as always.

Attendees can also register for a drawing of 20 prizes, including a Lego Model Railroad.

The event will feature several different operating model railroads encompassing over 1,700 square feet. For the serious and occasional hobbyists there will be model railroading clinics to teach the beginner and experienced modeler methods of developing creative model railroads.

Several vendors will be selling model railroad equipment and accessories on do-it-yourself modeling and much more. There will be lectures, videos, and slide presentations on area railroads including some of Newtown’s historic railroads.

There will also be door prizes and food trucks.

As mentioned earlier, the show is being hosted to raise funds to support childhood cancer charities in Connecticut.

Childhood cancer is one of the most difficult experiences a family can endure. The Lions have again joined the Tommy Fund team for childhood cancer support at Yale New Haven’s Childhood Cancer Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Newtown Lions Club Foundation actively supports research for childhood cancer as one of the five major pillars the Lions serve.

According to National Cancer Institute (NCI), in the United States in 2023, an estimated 9,910 new cases of cancer were diagnosed among children from birth to 14 years of age, and about 1,040 children are expected to die from the disease. The estimated new cancer cases among adolescents and young adults in this country were estimated to be greater than 85,000. This amounts to approximately 4.4% of all new cancer cases at any age.

Also according to NCI, while cancer death rates for the age group birth to 14 years have declined by 70% from 1970 through 2020, cancer remains the leading cause of death from disease among children. The most common types of cancer diagnosed in children ages 0-14 years are leukemias, brain and other central nervous system tumors, and lymphomas.

Admission to the Newtown Lions Club Model Train Show is $8 in advance for adults ($10 door), $5 for ages 9-12, and free for ages 8 and under. For additional information or advance tickets visit newtownlions.org.

The Lions Club regularly presents events that double as fundraisers for other causes. Proceeds from the Mustang Raffle, Great Pootatuck Duck Race, and Stuff-A- Truck events all help Newtown Lions Club Foundation serve those in need. Newtown Lions Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Meanwhile, the Newtown Lions Club 2026 Mustang Raffle is about to conclude.

The raffle drawing will take place in front of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, today at 1 pm.

This year’s car is a 2024 fully loaded Atlas Blue metallic color Mustang convertible. Car Committee Chair Oscar De Los Santos notes it is “by far the most popular Mustang we’ve raffled off since we switched to the newer models. Anyone who wins this car is driving away with a genuine treasure.”

Tickets are $20 and available through newtownlions.org, from most Newtown Lions Club members, and at Dodgingtown Garage, 61 Dodgingtown Road/Route 302.
