Newtown Congregational Church’s Circle of Hope hosted an author program and luncheon with Newtown resident Elissa Altman on the afternoon of October 12.

Ms Altman, who recently released her third book, Motherland: A Memoir of Love, Loathing, and Longing, spoke about her memoir and signed copies for attendees.

The event was co-hosted by independent bookstore Byrd’s Books, located in Bethel.

Alice Hutchinson, owner of Byrd’s Books, spoke to the crowd gathered about her background and expressed the importance of supporting local businesses. She shared how, in doing so, it benefits the community and employs local residents.

When Ms Hutchinson introduced Ms Altman to the podium, she prefaced, “I can’t say enough great things about Motherland.”

After a roar of applause, Ms Altman echoed Ms Hutchinson’s sentiments about supporting local bookstores, as they are a “huge gift” to the community.

Ms Altman began her talk by saying, “I have a wonderful mother, who I have a complicated relationship with,” which her book chronicles.

She went on to say, “Even those blessed with a wonderful relationship [with their mothers], it’s always complex.”

In that way, the book is relatable for all those who have relationships with mothers, no matter what age or stage of life.

Byrd’s Books will also be hosting an event with Ms Altman dubbed “Motherland, Martinis, and Whine,” scheduled for Friday, October 18, at 7 pm, at the bookstore, 178 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel.
