To the Editor:

A seat on Newtown’s Legislative Council, with oversight on legislative and budgetary matters for the town, is an awesome responsibility. I can think of no one more qualified to undertake that responsibility than Dr Michelle Embree Ku.

As a scientist, Michelle has the keen ability to remain objective while gathering and weighing all evidence before arriving at a decision. In addition, Michelle’s commitment is unmatched. A fact finder and lifelong learner by nature, Michelle strives to gather as much information as possible on issues. Whether it means attending other town board meetings, watching meeting videos online, reading meeting minutes, or contacting relevant parties for complete information, Michelle will do it. I challenge you to find a smarter, more prepared person in the room when Michelle is in attendance.

As an eight-year member of Newtown’s Board of Education, four as BOE chair, Michelle has encountered tough issues and decisions, from the aftermath of tragedy to building a new school to the current pandemic, with thoughtful deliberation and a balanced approach. Just as Michelle has always acted in the best interested every stakeholder of the school community in her role on the Board of Education, I have no doubt she will work in the best interest of the entire town with equal care and dedication as a member of the Legislative Council.

I share Michelle’s view that Newtown’s focus must be to provide the best community services to its residents while addressing financial challenges. Her commitment to continued investment in infrastructure and prioritizing public safety and health is admirable. I have complete confidence that Michelle will be a productive, dedicated, fair member of the Legislative Council. If you are a resident of District 3, please cast your vote for Dr Michelle Embree Ku for Legislative Council on November 2.
