BROOKFIELD — Newtown High School's girls' soccer team, the No. 6 seed in the bracket, went on the road and defeated No. 3 Brookfield in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on October 26.

With the win, the Nighthawks will visit No. 2 Pomperaug of Southbury in the semifinals on Wednesday, October 28 (time to be determined).

In the Brookfield game, Newtown opened a 2-0 halftime lead and went ahead 3-0 in the second half. Delia Stango opened the scoring and assisted Sia Verma who scored from the top of the 18-yard box. Olivia Fernandes added to the lead with a blast from the right side that found the top left corner of the goal.

The Nighthawks had solid defensive play from Sara Ruddy, Gianna Mascaro, Sadie Singlak, Ana Morris, Peyton Merrifield, and Addie Kopp. Goaltender Elise Ansman made some key stops, including an in-close chance for the Bobcats. Mascaro and Fernandes blocked consecutive shots to help the Nighthawks maintain a two-goal edge just after Brookfield got on the scoreboard.

Newtown Coach Adam Bourret's team, which also defeated Brookfield during the regular season, proved the seedings do not matter.

"We knew we were a top-four team all year," Bourret said. "We didn't end up that way so now it's time to prove it."
