Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*A refresher course with AARP DRIVING on Monday and Tuesday, November 5–6, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both days. The fee is $10.

*POT LUCK DINNER will be November 6, from 4 to 6:30 pm. Cost is $5 per person

*BINGO is November 7.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINIC by appointment only on Tuesday, November 8, 9 am to noon. Call 270-4310.

Coming Up

*The Newtown Senior Center WILL BE CLOSED on Monday, November 12, Veterans’ Day and November 22 and 23 for Thanksgiving.

*HOT TOPICS IN ELDER LAW talk will be Wednesday, November 14, 1 to 2 pm. Elder Law Attorney Ann L. Fowler-Cruz will discuss major legislative changes that impact seniors. Also sign up for a 20-minute personal consultation with Attorney Fowler-Cruz to be held on November 20, from 1 to 4 pm.

*Thanksgiving bingo will be November 15.

*HEALTH WATCH will be presented by the Bethel Visiting Nurses Association on Wednesday, November 21, at 1 pm.

*CHRISTMAS AT PLATZL BRAUHAUS in Pomona, N.Y., on Tuesday, December 4, at 8:30 am. Enjoy a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, sing along or dance with the Christmas Band. The cost is $75 per person

*ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY will be on Tuesday, December 11, from 11 am to 3 pm, at The Waterview on Route 34 on the Monroe/Newtown line, with a gourmet buffet, champagne toast, 50/50 raffle, music and entertainment. Call the Newtown Senior Center for reservations, 270-4310; $35.00 per person.­

Day Trips

*Viva Las Vegas!! AT THE AQUA TURF CLUB on Tuesday, November 13. Enjoy a day filled with food, entertainment, games and prizes. Depart at 10 am; cost is $67.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

Menu For Week of

November 5–9

Reservations must be made 3 days in advance.

Monday: November 5: Portuguese chicken, Spanish rice, green beans, whole wheat bread, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: November 6: Seafood salad on bed of lettuce with tomato and marinated beet salad, Portuguese roll, grape juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Chili with beans served over half of a fresh baked potato and topped with shredded cheddar cheese, fiesta corn, corn bread, Bartlett pears.

Thursday: Tomato soup with crackers, grilled cheese sandwich, tossed salad with croutons and Italian dressing, rice pudding with whipped topping.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: November 12: Veterans’ Day: Closed

Tuesday: November 13: Chicken parmesan, penne with marinara sauce, chopped spinach, parmesan cheese, garlic bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.
