To the Editor:

Currently, as chairman of the Legislative Council, a political body reactive to the needs of the voters, I look to John Madzula for fiscal guidance as chairman of the Board of Finance.

John is a distinguished attorney who has kept a careful watch on Newtown’s fiscal health as chairman of the Board of Finance. I have served five terms on the Legislative Council and two terms on the Board of Selectmen working closely with current First Selectman Dan Rosenthal and Selectman Maureen Crick Owen. Both offices required me to work across party lines for the good of Newtown.

John and I collaborate well together. Most requests from the voters come at a price. That is where I rely on John’s leadership of the Board of Finance to determine the cost, if the added value is worth the price or if there is a better way to give the voters what they need. Similarly, as the chair of the Legislative Council, I work with the members from both parties, providing guidance to ensure well-reasoned decisions are made for Newtown.

When the important business of the recently adopted Board of Education Administrator’s contract arose, John and I scheduled a joint meeting so the Board of Education could present the contract to both bodies. We worked together to determine whether the terms were in the best interest of our students, administrators, and taxpayers.

Whether it is budgets, contracts, or the financing of capital investments, I have worked closely with John and have received sound advice. I have great confidence that John and I understand how Newtown government functions and we will make a great team on The Board of Selectmen. We are ready to hit the ground running on day one because of our unmatched experience. Please cast your vote for John and me for the Board of Selectmen.
