Miss Greater Watertown Scholarship Offered

Scholarships for education are available to young women in Newtown through the Miss Greater Watertown Scholarship Program.

Dana Daunis, the current Miss Greater Watertown, will be present at contestant rehearsals to provide assistance and advice. Dana has competed at both State and National pageants and will be invaluable to contestants, whether they have prior competition experience or not. Dana, a vocalist, will also be performing during the stage show in March.

Single women ages 17 to 24 are invited to participate in the upcoming event. They must live, work or go to school in the following towns: Newtown, Washington Depot, Roxbury, Watertown, or Oakville.

A small committee of volunteers works throughout the year to secure sponsors and put together the event, without charge to any of the entrants. Each contestant competes in four areas: private interview, talent, evening wear, and lifestyle/fitness.

The interview is conducted early in the afternoon and the remaining three competitions happen on stage in the evening. At the end of the show, the contestant with the most points is awarded the title, scholarship, prizes, and the right to move on to the Connecticut Pageant in June. Runner-up scholarships are also awarded.

Each year, volunteers from across America produce local and state pageant competitions that all lead to the Miss America pageant. “There’s no doubt, Miss America is a heartland event,” states Art McMaster, CEO of The Miss America Pageant.

In addition to the fun and excitement of a live stage production, contestants in the Miss Greater Watertown program also have the opportunity to work with the local committee of volunteers for several weeks prior to the competition to sharpen their interview and stage presentation skills. There is no charge for this training.

Even a young woman who has never participated in such an event, can, through these weekly practices, develop self-confidence, learn new skills and meet other young women from the greater Watertown region.

Information has been mailed to all public and private high schools in eligible towns. Young women interested in obtaining more information about this scholarship pageant program are asked to contact Louise Porto at 860-274-0338 or email louiseforpageant@yahoo.com.
