This weekend, the Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut will see 11 swimmers from its Makos program honored at the annual awards banquet of Connecticut Swimming Inc. at the Aqua Turf in Plainville.

The banquet recognizes swimmers who ranked as the fastest 16 in the state during the 2005-06 short and long course season. Connecticut Swimming Inc. governs USA swimming in Connecticut.

With more than 4,000 swimmers registered as USA swimmers in the state, making top 16 is an exceptional accomplishment.

The Makos, under the direction of head coach Roger Simmons, will see a host of swimmers honored on Sunday and representing Newtown will be Abigail Atkinson (15 and over), Anthony Fiore (15 and over), Matt Iassogna (13/14) and Luke Fiore (13/14).

At the YMCA championships, Atkinson came in seventh for the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.02), eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:12.48), ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.94), ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.08), 13th in the 50 freestyle (25:57) and 15th in the 400 individual medley (4:46.76).

Anthony Fiore earned 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.58) and his brother Luke took 12th in the 50 freestyle (27:12) and 16th in the 100 freestyle (59:88). Iassogna finished 15th in the 100 butterfly (1:08.26) and 16th in the 200 butterfly (2:36.30).

“I am so proud of these athletes,” said coach Simmons, who just completed his first season as Mako’s head coach. “Their dedication and success in the sport of swimming is an inspiration to us all. Top 16 placements at the state level is a terrific honor and they all can look forward to a bright future in the sport.”
