November 1980

An irate landlord is offering a $100 reward for the apprehension of vandals who destroyed several lights in back of his professional building on Church Hill Road on Halloween night. Dr Daum is upset because not only were the large globes broken off several of his lights in the back parking lot, but he also found a full can of lighter fluid which was run over by one of his employees.

A table full of drug paraphernalia, all confiscated within Newtown, was startling visible evidence of the extent of drug use in the community at a recent drug seminar sponsored by the Newtown Jr Woman's Club.

Dresser Industries, Inc of Newtown is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. Kicking off the festivities at a party and tour of the plant on Wednesday, October 29, company employees gathered with families, friends, and interested residents to celebrate the event. Dresser is one of the world's largest suppliers of high technology products and services to worldwide energy and natural resource and industrial markets.

The Indians, who have captured the Western Connecticut Conference swimming crown, will be competing in the league's first-ever swimming and diving championships this Friday, November 7, at New Fairfield High.

Newtown Chief of Police Louis Marchese told the Board of Police Commissioners Tuesday, November 4, that the department had been cited by the American Automobile Association for pedestrian safety. Chief Marchese said Newtown received the award because it had no deaths last year.

Quiet and efficient, knowledgeable and persevering, these are only a few adjectives that describe Newtown horsewoman Jeanne Concilio. Both she and her husband, Peter, are prominent figures in Newtown equestrian circles, and this week Jeanne makes her debut in the limelight of New York's National Horse Show.

Students in John Bird's fifth grade class took their project seriously as they studied, debated and video-taped a special pre-election program which culminated in the election of Ronald Reagan as president of the United States. Part of the program included 'person on the street' interviews, with students expressing favorable opinions for all candidates.

November 11, 1955

The Town Hall Board of Managers with the cooperation of Arthur J. Smith, Newtown High School Principal James F. Hinckley, Miss Kay Dolan and a group of interested high school students have organized an usher corps for town meetings. They felt that not only would it facilitate the mechanics of town meetings, especially the larger ones.

The Girls Scouts of Newtown will carry on a sale of Girl Scout cookies this Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12, at several locations in town to raise money to support activities of the various troops. Cookies at 35 cents a box will be on sale.

Twenty four "Tweenies" became Brownies last Thursday afternoon, November 3, as the full complement of Troop 129, Newtown's newest Brownie group, completed their qualifications and received their Brownie caps during the regular installation ceremony.

On Friday evening, November 4, the senior class held a late Halloween party in the high school cafeteria. About 35 seniors and their guests attended. Colorful decorations of pumpkins, balloons and streamers were arranged around the room. Dancing to records and refreshments of soda and doughnuts helped to make the evening a success.

Despite the inclement weather Friday night of last week, members of the Horticulture Club and their guests filled the lecture room of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library for an illustrated lecture on "Planting To Attract Winter Birds."

Members of Town Players Play Shop and friends held a cast party last Saturday night at the Hawley Manor, celebrating the successful run of "Mr Roberts" performed four nights at the end of October in the group's new little theater, Orchard Hill Road.

November 7, 1930

With the completion of the new highway between Derby and Sandy Hook over the Stevenson Dam and through the Village Berkshire, the New England Transportation company announces that effective November 9th, 1930, motor coach service heretofore operated between New Haven and Danbury via Oxford and Southbury will be diverted to the Stevenson Dam route.

In Tuesday's state and national election the Newtown democrats were successful electing their two representatives, Thomas M. Holihan and William A. Honan by more than 100 majority. Dean Cross for governor carried the town by 121 majority.

On November 4 the Girls' Friend Society held the monthly business meeting. Afterwards the girls finished the woven jar holders which they were making with reed. The girls voted to have Mrs Earle continue the class as they are profiting in Basketry Knowledge and enjoy it very much.

Town Team Basketball practice, Friday, at 7 pm. Everybody must be present as there will be an important minstrel show rehearsal preceding the practice.

The members of the Newtown Hook & Ladder Co., had an interesting session, at their monthly meeting, Monday night, when Fred Mayer, the genial steward of the company, served an excellent roast beef dinner, with mashed potato peas and jelly and home made apple pie and cheese with coffee to top it off. The occasion was notable by the presence of five members of the Meriden Fire department.

The All Saints' Day service at Trinity was better attended than ever before. A beautiful altar cloth of green silk in memory of Fannie Sophia Beers, a faithful communicant of the parish, was consecrated by the rector prior to the celebration of Holy Communion.

November 10, 1905

New roofs are being placed on the residence of the Misses Peck on the Boulevard. George W. Stuart has been doing the work. Mr Stuart has also erected a wood house for the Misses Peck.

S.W. Gledhill will have about 75 tons of old iron from the factory of the Sandy Hook Woolen Co., which he recently bought. Josiah Tilson has been assisting Mr Gledhill in getting the old iron in the scrap heap.

A petition for the recount of the vote cast for town treasurer in Newtown at the October election will be heard, Monday, before Judge George W. Wheeler in the Superior Court. It will be remembered that Mr Northrop defeated L.C. Morris, the republican nominee, by seven votes, Moderator Blackman throwing out 11 votes

A chrysanthemum show under the auspices of the Congregational Sunday school will be held on Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. The chrysanthemum plants raised by the children will be on exhibition and for sale.

With impressive ceremonies and in the presence of a congregation of 800 people, Rev Frederick F. Johnson was consecrated on Thursday last in Trinity church, a bishop of the Episcopal church, having been elected in June last by the House of Bishops to be an assistant to the venerable and beloved bishop of South Dakota, Rev William Hobart Hare, D.D. The weather was ideal for the fall season, and added to the completeness and joy of the occasion.
