Halloween Fun At The Senior Center

By Nancy K. Crevier

Tri-colored hair, over the top makeup, and brightly colored outfits scared away the gloom of the day as members of the Newtown Senior Center gathered Thursday, October 27, for a ghoulish turkey luncheon and a fiendish afternoon of bingo, wearing their finest Halloween apparel. Some celebrated in subtle costumes, with just an orange and black derby perched on their heads, or a feathery shawl over the shoulders. Other members were decked out in full Halloween regalia.

“Prisoners” Fred Hurst, Frank Furze, and Dominic Barillari, dressed in stripes, were a daunting chain gang of three. Dressed in a flashy red hat embellished with purple feathers, a purple feather boa around her neck, and a “diamond” studded cigarette holder, Florence DePalma took on the persona of a lady of the night, as she joined friends at a table.

Cowgirl Bea Piskura, a former Senior Center member visiting the area just for the Halloween party, dealt out the bingo cards to her “pardners” at the table, including Rastafarian Virginia Cooney.

Angela Fedak was devilish in her red sweat suit and sparkling red horns, as she helped costumed tablemates collate the newest Senior Center newsletter and get ready for the bingo tournament.

A mysterious, bewitching witch joined Dottie Dellapiano, also dressed in the garb of a witch, at one table, then swirled off in her long cloak to silently hover over the other bingo contestants. She appeared, strangely, just after Senior Center Director Marilyn Place “answered a phone call” in the back room.

The costumes elicited laughter and applause from fellow members. But when assistant to the director Barbara Hayden began to call out the bingo numbers, the room became as quiet as a cemetery on Halloween night.

“It’s all in good fun,” said Ms Place.
