Orienteering At Paugussett State Park

Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will hold its next meet on Sunday, November 18, at Paugussett State Park, off Dingle Brook Lane in Newtown. Registration begins at 10 am, with the start at 11. Cost is $5 per person.

Joe Brautigam of Bethel will be setting up the event. Participants will use an orienteering map and compass to find their way across the terrain, seeking orange and white flags at various land features.

The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course. The participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag.

In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time. At Paugussett, the competitors will find as many controls as possible within two hours.

Instruction and training will be available for beginners. Compasses will also be available for those who need to borrow one.

Contact Mr Brautigam for additional information at 790-7571 or JoeBrautigam@hotmail.com. Club information is available at www.faculty.fairfield.edu/rdewitt/wcoc.
