With just over five weeks left before the second anniversary of 12/14, First Selectman Pat Llodra and School Superintendent Dr Joseph V. Erardi, Jr have co-written a letter that is directed as much to immediate members of the Newtown and Sandy Hook communities as it is to the state and nation.

“As we approach the second anniversary of the tragedy that unfolded at Sandy Hook School on December 14, 2012, we again want to thank all of those  in neighboring towns, and across the state, nation and even the world, for the great kindness and support we receive,” the note reads.

“We continue as Newtowners, including the village of Sandy Hook, on our journey of recovery,” it continues. “This is a challenging journey, filled with days of joyful hope and occasional dips of despair. We are so grateful to have the friendship and support of many beyond our borders, but there is no escape from the realization that we are where we are because of the horrible loss of lives that occurred at the school on that fateful day.”

The officials state that this second anniversary, like the first one on December 14, 2013, will be recognized in personal reflection and remembrance.

“There will be no formal or official ceremonies to be held by the town or school district,” Mrs Llodra and Dr Erardi say in the letter.

“Each school may recognize the anniversary in ways that are appropriate for that student population,” it continues. “Our town organizations, such as Parks & Recreation, C.H. Booth Library, Edmond Town Hall, and the Senior Center are not planning any recognition events but may remember the anniversary in ways that are appropriate and within their scope of service.”

On behalf of the entire community, the note continues to encourage others to create a long-lasting and sustainable good “to honor those who lost their lives in the senseless act of violence.

“We cannot undo the awful happening on that day – but we can choose how we respond to it and that choice could maybe have long-lasting positive effects,” the note concludes. “Together, we believe this statement represents the best interest of our community. Thank you for respecting our call on behalf of all residents and school children for privacy and gentleness of spirit.”
