The State Department of Environmental Protection is having a half-mile access road built from Great Quarter Road into the Lower Paugussett State Forest. Don Smith, Jr, a forester in DEP’s Newtown office, said the road will help his department manage the forest, and allow people to get into the forest to cut wood.

This past summer, taking into consideration the input from staff, parents and students, along with administration, a policy was formulated for Newtown High School which awaits approval by the board of education. The purpose of the policy is to emphasize the importance of being in class and to decrease the number of absences from class and from school.

Republicans had reason to celebrate Tuesday night, November 6, as the Reagan/Bush landslide led the GOP to massive victories across the state, giving the party the 5th District Congressional seat and control of the General Assembly in Hartford. John G. Rowland, a two-term Republican state representative from Waterbury, unseated three-term Congressman William R. Ratchford of Danbury.

 

November 13, 1959

The Building Inspector, Earle H. Megin, has announced there were 41 building permits and seven septic system permits issued during the month and show cost of construction estimated at $238,080. These permits cover 17 new one family houses, one new summer cottage, four new private garages, one store addition on factory addition and the balance cover alterations and additions.

An excellent piece of road work has just been completed under the supervision of Howard A. Beardsley, town road supervisor, at the corner of Hanover Road and School House Hill. The water condition which has caused damage to the road and to property owner’s lawns has been corrected by repaving the ditches and reopening the catch basins.

A membership meeting of interested parents and teachers of the Hawley School will be held on Thursday, November 19, at 8 pm in the school auditorium. All parents, teachers, and persons interested in the welfare of Hawley School students and of public education in general are urged to be present on November 19 to help set up the standards which will guide the organization in the future.

A Fashion Hat Show and Card Party will be held by the Sisterhood of Congregation Adath Israel on Saturday night, November 14, in the Social Hall of the Synagogue on Huntingtown Road. The latest styles in hats will be shown by the House of Hats of Danbury, and Mrs William Stockman, owner of the House of Hats, will be the commentator of the fashion hat show.

November 9, 1934

A group of interested parishioners of St Rose’s church met at the home of Mrs John McCarthy on Main street, last Wednesday afternoon, and formed a new society to be known as the “St Rose’s Mission Aid Society.” The object of this society will be to sew articles of clothing for foreign missions, among which is the leper colony in Ceylon. Bandages will be rolled especially for the leper colony.

A special meeting for the board of trustees of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library was held at the library building last Friday evening, to take action on the court order of the Superior Court to take over the books and trust funds of the Newtown Library Association before the 20th of November. It was voted to do so and work of removing the books to the Booth Library for cataloguing will take place in the near future.

Telephone service on the Bethel road was disrupted for several hours, Sunday afternoon, when seven telephone poles were blown down across the highway by the storm about three o’clock near the residence of Mrs Alice Northrop. Constables William Blake, Wesley Stanton, and Preston Beers re-routed the traffic.

A serious accident occurred early Wednesday evening in front of the residence of Mrs R.M. Leonard, when Miss Vern Smith in trying to avoid another car coming onto the main road left the road and struck a tree. The car was overturned and Mrs Harold Smith was taken to the Bridgeport Hospital. Miss Vern Smith escaped with slight bruises and a shaking up.

 

November 12, 1909

E.S. Lovell has finished the task of drawing the dirt for grading about the Newtown Savings Bank building. David Kenzie superintended the job of grading. Two heavy trucks were brought from Danbury, Thursday, to cart from the Newtown railroad station 23,000 pounds of steel, which is to go into the construction of the Savings bank vaults.

The Sandy Hook Surface Water Co, Inc, have been busy, this week, building over the great aqueduct which spans the Pootatuck river. It is confidently expected the usual semi-annual winter suspension of business will be avoided.

On Wednesday about 2:30 pm, a handsome deer with horns appeared within 200 feet of The Bee office. In a few minutes he turned and went north through the fields, vaulting the fences with apparent ease. It disappeared over the hill just west of Thomas Cavanaugh’s place.

The Newtown Dramatic Club will present at the Town hall on Friday evening, November 19, “Mrs Briggs of the Poultry Yard.” This play is of three acts and is full of amusing situations and will keep an audience laughing. An orchestra will be present to furnish music between the acts; also to furnish music for dancing after the entertainment, which is included in the price of admission, 25 cents and 35 cents.
