Great Floral Arrangements From Basic Bouquets

The members of The Garden Club of Newtown enjoyed a workshop on flower arrangement during their October 27 meeting.

Bonnie Johnson had a 25 year career in graphic design, but left that behind to follow her passion for floral design. Her workshop for the garden club focused on the theme of creating great floral arrangements using inexpensive supermarket bouquets.

Each participant received a container and flowers in fall colors, green ferns and steMrs of wheat to use for her own arrangement.  Mrs Johnson began with the basics of choosing and conditioning the flowers, and moved on to demonstrate soaking the oasis foam and fastening it into the container. Her advice is to begin the design by establishing a focal line, and then fill that in with green material and flowers.

She shared wonderful tips that come from her years of experience, and a lot of advice about easy and inexpensive ways to create floral designs.

After the club members had finished their own creations, Mrs Johnson took her demonstration arrangement apart and proceeded to make a totally different design with the same container and flowers, adding branches for height and small pumpkins for a totally different effect.

Next month the club members will begin work on their Annual Greens Sale.

The Garden Club of Newtown meets on the fourth Tuesday of most months and is always happy to have new members join the group. The club uses the profits from its fundraising efforts to contribute to the community in many ways, including scholarships for Newtown High School graduates through Newtown Scholarship Association.

Anyone interested in more information about the club is asked to call club president Beth Caldwell at 942-2445.
