The Inner Energy Of Painting

At the November 11 meeting of The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN), guest artist Edward Spaulding DeVoe will present a demonstration of design within a still life and discuss his concept of the “inner energy” of a painting.

The program will begin at 7:30 pm and is free of charge. It will be held in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

As a teacher, Mr DeVoe sees that what is lacking in many students is not the ability to see and paint detail, but rather the ability to see and paint what should be inside the surface of the painting.  Mr DeVoe will show how the “inner abstract” — the creative elements that exist inside the surface of a painting — supports the subject and expands the story of the painting.

Edward Spaulding DeVoe exhibits throughout the United States and abroad. His works are in numerous private and public collections in Europe, the Middle East and North America. Corporate collections include the Ritz Carlton, Reader’s Digest and Boerhinger Ingelheim Corporation. He has won Best In Show in many competitions, including the President’s Award from National Arts Club.

Mr DeVoe is acclaimed for the authenticity of his techniques. He is recognized for his unique ability to “create modern paintings with the qualities of the Renaissance Masters.” Through painstaking research and collaboration with the noted Italian restorer Pierro Minone, Mr DeVoe developed techniques that capture the natural brilliance and transparency of oil mediums.

He taught landscape painting for over a decade in the heart of the Hudson River’s greatest scenery at The United States Military Academy, West Point.

He is a graduate of Colgate University where he earned a BA in Fine Arts.  He continues to paint and teach the techniques of the Old Masters to workshops, group classes and private students.

He lives with his wife, author Kristen Skedgell, in the lush foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is available from Ruth Newquist at 426-6654.
