To the Editor:

With the final step of the Charter Revision cycle concluded with Election Day’s referendum, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Charter Revision Commissioners for their service in presenting our community with a plan for better governance in Newtown.

Their hard work and dedication to our town is worthy of appreciation and respect. The process was rigorous, respectful, and thoughtful, with extensive input from the public throughout.

I want to thank the voters of Newtown for their participation in the election. Although not all of the Commission’s recommendations were adopted, a meaningful opportunity to debate the issues was afforded and ultimately, the citizens of Newtown made their choice. It is the essence of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Substantial change in government is rarely successful at its first presentation. It is my hope that future Charter Revision Commissions can build on our good work and present a plan for better governance that is ultimately approved by the citizens of Newtown.

It has been my honor to serve as the Chairman of the Commission, to work with the many town officials and local citizens dedicated to improving the quality of life in Newtown, and finally to present options worthy of your consideration.
