Race officials are warning residents on certain roads along with those who want to travel over them that there will be a 5K road race — the annual Turkey Trot — in the center of town on tomorrow morning between 7:30 and 9 am.

Travel restrictions may occur within the Borough during that time. Readers are asked make appropriate plans and allow for additional time if they need to travel in the Borough during these times.

Working with Newtown Police Department and State of Connecticut Highway Department, the race committee has obtained approval for a course that includes the following roads during these approximate times: Queen Street, 7:35 to 8:30 am; Glover, 7:50 to 8:15 am; Church Hill, 7:45 to 8:10 am; Meadow, 7:50 to 8:20 am; The Boulevard, 7:45 to 8:00 am; Elizabeth, 7:50 to 8:25 am; School House Hill, 7:45 to 8 am; Grand Place, 8 to 8:30 am; and Wendover, 7:45 to 8:15 am.

The Newtown 5K Turkey Trot Road Race and Fun Walk is an annual benefit for the library.

Held in the scenic and historic center of town, the Turkey Trot has become a community tradition and highlight for many families over the Thanksgiving weekend. This year’s race is expected to attract over 1,100 runners and walkers as well as family members and loved ones.

Participants will again experience the updated, faster layout for the racecourse through the Borough of Newtown, and spectators can hang out with music and the good company of friends and neighbors.

Revamped in 2019, the course now starts and ends at Newtown Middle School, providing a single point for runners and spectators to gather.

The course has additionally eliminated the climb up Schoolhouse Hill Road, instead taking runners and walkers toward Queen Street via Wendover Road. The result is a course that is mostly flat with a few gentle hills while it loops through local neighborhoods in the center of town.

The revamped course of Newtown Turkey Trot begins and ends at Newtown Middle School, and takes participants over primarily flat surfaces while remaining USTF certified. Access for vehicles along the roads will be limited between 7:30 and 9 am Thanksgiving morning.
