ACS Honors Local Volunteers

WILTON — The American Cancer Society of Fairfield and and Litchfield County recognized more than 35 volunteers and guests at its annual Volunteer Recognition Reception recently at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury.

Among them were Clorieanne Gavin of Newtown who received the Relay For Life Cancer Control Award and Don Oman of Sandy Hook who received the Quality of Life – Volunteer Award.

“Don Oman has been volunteering in the Road to Recovery for more than 15 years. Amazing!” said Mark Graham, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society who served as emcee for the evening.

“Don is a kind, warm-hearted, compassionate man and his personality shines through with everyone he meets. He’s even had special requests from patients that are encouraged by his friendly nature and comforting support,” said Mr Graham.

In presenting the Cancer Control Relay for Life award to Glorianne Garvin, Mr Graham said Ms Garvin made cancer awareness a priority when she took on the role of cancer control chairman for the relay that was held in Newtown in June.

“With eagerness and her bright disposition she presented new ideas and brought cancer prevention and early detection messages to the community at large,” Mr Graham said.

Each year the American Cancer Society honors volunteers who exemplify the mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering, and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
