Weekend Holiday Events

The first weekend in December has become a major calendar event, with countless groups scheduling more events between Friday evening and Sunday evening than at any other time of the year.

True to form, December 2–4, 2005, looks like it will be very busy. Residents and neighbors have the following holiday events from which to choose:

 

Friday, December 2

Õ Tree Lighting, town’s Christmas Tree at Hawley Pond, Elm Drive at Hawley Road, 6:30 pm, caroling will lead into lighting of tree by Tercentennial Committee Chairman Dan Cruson, then visits with Santa and Mrs Claus and light refreshments will continue the event.

Õ 6th Annual You Can Never Have Enough Christmas holiday boutique, St Rose of Lima Parish Hall, Church Hill Road, 6:30–10 pm, admission $5 Friday night, free remainder of weekend, boutique (not a craft fair) offers holiday jewelry, nativity sets, unique treasures, and more, also raffles, continues to Sunday.

 

Saturday, December 3

Õ Newtown Rotary Club’s 45th Annual Pancake Day, at Edmond Town Hall’s Alexandria Room, 8 am–1 pm, $5 adults, $3 ages 10 and under.

Õ St John’s Church Organic Café & Holiday Marketplace, 10 am–4:30 pm, St John’s Episcopal Church, 5 Washington Avenue, eat in or take out, holiday shopping; 426-9938.

Õ You Can Never Have Enough Christmas boutique continues, 10 am–7 pm, see December 2 details.

Õ Visits with Auntie Claus, the little green barn, 4 Washington Avenue, 4:30–6 pm; 270-1820.

Õ Holiday Cookies & Hot Cider, Coach’s Deli, 102 Church Hill Road, 5–6 pm, get warm nourishment before Sandy Hook tree lighting; 270-8161.

Õ Karaoke Christmas Caroling and Sandy Hook Tree Lighting, Church Hill at Washington Avenue (Sandy Hook Center/The Glen), caroling to precede tree lighting, tree will be lit at 6 pm sharp; 270-1820.

Sunday, December 4

Õ Final day You Can Never Have Enough Christmas boutique, 8 am–2 pm, see December 2 details.

Õ “Celebrating Newtown’s Historic Families,” C.H. Booth Library, 11 am–4 pm, family histories and memorabilia will highlight some of the people and families who have shaped and developed Newtown through history.

Õ 20th Annual Newtown Holiday Festival, on and immediately around Main Street, 11 am–5 pm, tickets $23 adults in advance, $25 adults day of, $20 seniors and children, walking tour of historic homes, Festival of Trees, ballet performances, live music, antiques show (begins at 10), family workshop, and more. The offices of The Newtown Bee, at 5 Church Hill Road, will be on the walking tour.

Õ Newtown Historical Society Author Book Signing & Artist Print Signings, Matthew Curtiss House, 44 Main Street, 11 am–5 pm, authors Mary Mitchell and Andrea Zimmermann (only until 1), photographer Jill Baimel (also until 1) will sign their recent books and posters, Dan Cruson will sign copies of his publications, house also open for self-guided tours; 426-5937.

Õ Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, Trinity Church, 36 Main Street, 2 pm, selection of the Christmas season will feature anthems, hymns, and readings associated with the season of Advent, all welcome.

Õ Newtown Choral Society Holiday Concert, Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street, 3:30 pm, tickets $9 adults, $7 seniors and ages 12 and under.
