For Bariatric Patients

DERBY — Bariatric surgery patients can lose weight especially quickly after gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. These patients, however, are not always able or willing to go shopping for new clothes every few weeks as their body is changing, and often end up wearing clothing that does not fit properly.

This can affect body image, self-esteem, and confidence.

To help bariatric patients bridge this gap between the time of surgery and reaching their healthy weight — when it often makes more sense purchase a new wardrobe — Griffin Bariatrics has assembled a “Clothes Closet” with men’s and women’s clothing in barely worn or new condition, which has been donated by bariatric patients and hospital staff and family members. The closet is stocked with coats, professional clothing, casual wear, accessories, and evening attire.

All of the items in the Griffin Bariatrics Clothes Closet, located on the first floor of Griffin Hospital, are available to bariatric patients free of charge, but donations to the Griffin Hospital Development Fund are welcomed.

Donations are directed toward bariatric education, equipment, and program initiatives.  Patients can also make a donation to the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), an organization that represents those affected by obesity.

Donation forms are available at the Clothes Closet.

The clothes closet is open  from 4:30 to 6:30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month, prior to the monthly “On Track” Support Group meetings hosted by Griffin Bariatrics.

Patients interested in visiting the Griffin Bariatrics Clothes Closet can also contact Kim Fisher, bariatric program coordinator, at 203-732-7108 or e-mail kfisher@griffinhealth.org to schedule an appointment.
