Scholarships Available

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships , typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Women of Innovation Awards — The Women of Innovation Planning Committee is seeking nominations of high school senior girls in Connecticut for recognition of their accomplishments in the classroom in math, technology, or science. The nominee should excel academically in these areas or as a young inventor who has accomplished an extraordinary technology feat that should be recognized for its innovation and uniqueness. Refer to the website www.ct.org for the nomination form and qualifications. Online nominations must be submitted by December 12.

Horticulture Club of Newtown — The Horticulture Club of Newtown offers an annual award to a graduating student who is a resident of Newtown and seeking to pursue a two- or four-year course of study in environmental studies, horticulture, agriculture, ecology, conservation or forestry. Applicants are required to write a 500-word essay, submit a current academic transcript, and a letter of recommendation. Applications are available in the NHS Career Center and should be returned to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by April 11.

Pathways to Academic Excellence (PAcE) — The PAcE program provides $10,000 annual scholarships for four years of study to students accepted at Southern Connecticut University with a designated major in math or the sciences. Eligible students must reside in Connectiicut, maintain a B average in high school, and demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA. Refer to the website www.SouthernCt.edu/pathways for the online application and complete details. An application workshop will be held January 10 with a snow date of January 12. The completed application packet and FAFSA filing must be submitted by January 31.

Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest — Prudent Publishing is offering a $10,000 college scholarship for the winning submission of an original greeting card design. The card can be a holiday card, birthday, or all-occasion greeting card including photography, artwork, or graphics and will be made into a bona fide greeting card. All high school and college level students are welcome to participate. Contest submissions are due by January 14. Refer to the website www.gallerycollection.com for complete details.

Future CPA Scholarship — The National Conference of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Practitioners and the American Institute of CPAs will award several $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to pursue careers as certified public accountants. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and attend a two- or four-year college. Guidance counselors should mail the application, essay and transcript package. All applications must be received by December 15. Refer to the website www.nccpap.org for complete details.
