YALE’S ART GALLERY PRESENTS ‘THE ARCHITECT’S TABLE’

AVV 10-8 #715038

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The Yale University Art Gallery presents “The Architect’s Table: Swid Powell and Postmodern Design,” on view through January 6 on the third floor.

The exhibition celebrates the promised gift of the Swid Powell Collection and Records to the Yale University Art Gallery. The company, founded in 1982 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell, produced housewares designed by the foremost architects of the 1980s, including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Stephen Holl, Richard Meier, Robert A. M. Stern and Stanley Tigerman.

Powell helped the architects transform their ideas into finished objects, many of which have become icons of postmodern design. This exhibition of highlights from the archive includes drawings, promotional material, silver, ceramics and glass, and rare prototypes for unexecuted objects.

John Stuart Gordon, the Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Assistant Curator of American Decorative Arts, organized the exhibition.

Yale University Art Gallery is at the corner of Chapel and York Streets. For information, www.artgallery.yale.edu or 203-432-0600.
