Dorothy Eileen Madsen

Lived Life Fully

Dorothy Eileen (Mikita) Madsen, 71, died November 23, at her home in Oxford, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on July 11, 1938, in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Frank Mikita and Helen Pawlowicz.

She was the wife of John Madsen for almost 51 years, whom she married after graduating from the University of Bridgeport in 1958 with an associate’s degree in fashion merchandising.

They lived in Bridgeport and Portland before moving to Newtown, where they raised three daughters. They then lived in Southbury for 21 years before moving to Oxford Green.

Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Katherine Madsen of Bozeman, Mont., Theresa Wrinn and her husband, Joseph, of Woodbury, and Diane Purdy and her husband, Robert, of Markham, Ontario, Canada. She also leaves behind five grandsons; her brother Donald Mikita and his wife, Mary, of Newtown; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; four nieces; and one nephew.

Mrs Madsen was a retired medical secretary and transcriptionist, and an office manager. She was also employed as a pharmacy technician. She was a certified CPR and Basic First Aid instructor for the Danbury Chapter of the American Red Cross for many years.

With a talent for sewing, she also spent many years designing and constructing costumes for Ballet Miniature and the Malenkee Ballet Company in Newtown. She enjoyed traveling to beautiful and exotic locations around the world with her family and friends. She also enjoyed taking ballet, and attending cooking classes.

Mrs Madsen’s family would like to thank Hallie Baskins and Sam Stirk and the staff from VNS Hospice at Home of Oxford for the compassionate and loving care they gave to her.

Per Mrs Madsen’s request, there will be no calling hours. The family will have a private service at her home. A memorial celebration for family and friends will be held from noon to 4 pm, Sunday, December 6, at The Ridge Club off Riggs Road, at Oxford Green in Oxford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter, PO Box 506 Kensington CT 06037; VNS Hospice at Home, 84 Oxford Road Oxford CT 06478; or The Lutheran Home of Southbury, 990 Main Street North, Southbury CT 06488.
