Poetry Series Is Returning

To Its Original Home Town

Wednesday Night Poetry Series, the longest running weekly poetry series in Connecticut, is moving back to Newtown on December 9.

Elizabeth Thomas, a widely published poet, performer, teacher and advocate of the arts, will be the featured poet. The series, founded in 1995 in Newtown by former resident Faith Vicinanza, has found a new home at The Blue Z Coffeehouse, 127 South Main Street.

The series includes an open mic and featured poet, although some weeks will offer only a themed open mic or a workshop. Evenings will begin at 7:30 with the open mic sign-up.

Elizabeth Thomas is the author of two poetry collections and one book on writing for youth and teachers. She has read her work throughout the United States. She has been a member of three Connecticut National Poetry Slam teams and in 1998 was a member of the US team that traveled to Sweden.

Much of her energy and time is devoted to designing and teaching writing programs for schools and organizations in many parts of the country. These programs promote literacy and the power of written and spoken word.

An advocate of youth in the arts, Ms Thomas is a coach and organizer with Brave New Voices: International Youth Poetry Slam and Festival. She is also the founder of UpWords Poetry (UpWordsPoetry.com), a company dedicated to promoting programs for young writers and educators based on the belief that poetry is meant to be heard out loud and in person.
