Skate Night Benefits Memorial Fund

By Eliza Hallabeck

A Skate Night at Danbury Ice Rink was held Saturday, November 8, to raise money for the Brennan Merrick Memorial Fund.

The Newtown Middle School PTA established the memorial fund for the family of Brennan Merrick, a 13-year-old eighth grade student at the school who passed away November 8.

The Skate Night raised more than $2,200 by the end of the night. Danbury Ice Rink donated the ice time and multiple raffle items. The night was open to seventh and eighth grade students only, and cost $10 per person.

In a letter to the families of NMS students, Mary Ann Jacob, the president of the NMS PTA, wrote that Brennan’s family has asked for any interested people to make contributions to Boy Scout Troop 770 (which can be sent to St Rose of Lima Church at 46 Church Hill Road), to the Newtown Scholarship Association (which can be sent to PO Box 302, Newtown CT 06770), or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (which can be mailed to 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York City NY 10005).

The memorial fund was set up between the NMS PTA and Newtown Savings Bank, and anyone who is interested in making a donation can send a check to Newtown Savings Bank (attn Branch Manager Brian Amey), 39 Main Street, Newtown CT 06770, and all checks should be made out to the Brennan Merrick Memorial Fund.
