Town police plan to conduct two charitable drives for the needy during the holiday season — one for toys and one for food.

On Saturday, December 6, police will conduct a Toys For Tots drive from 10 am to 2 pm at two locations. The event simultaneously will be held in front of the TJ Maxx store in Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street, and also in front of The Toy Tree at 14 Church Hill Road.

People unable to attend the toy collection events may leave new toys for the Toys For Tots drive at the police station lobby at 3 Main Street, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Also, on Saturday, December 13, Newtown police and Redding police will jointly hold a food drive for the needy. The event known as Stuff a Police Cruiser With Food is slated for 9 am to noon in front of the Big Y supermarket, in Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

The food donations will benefit local food assistance groups in the Newtown and Redding.
