Newtown traditionally spends one weekend in late November/early December celebrating the holidays, and 2019 is no different.

Three separate tree lightings are planned, a number of groups are hosting special fundraisers, and the 34th Annual Newtown Holiday Festival is among the holiday-related events this weekend.

Friday, December 6

*SHVFR Christmas Trees Sale, 6-9 pm (earlier by chance), Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue main station, 18-20 Riverside Road, fresh-cut Christmas trees, wreaths, pine roping, and cemetery boxes, sold by members of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, continues to Christmas Eve or while supplies last; 203-426-4392, sandyhookfire.com.

*35th Annual Ram Pasture Tree Lighting, 6:30 pm, Ram Pasture, Elm Drive at Hawley Road, entertainment begins at 6:30, tree lit at 7, then caroling and visits with Santa and Mrs Claus, light refreshments.

Saturday, December 7

*59th Pancake Breakfast with Santa, 7 am-noon, Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street, $8 adults, $4 age 10 and under, fresh pancakes, sausage, applesauce, juices, chocolate milk and coffee, also visits with Santa Claus, photos with Santa ($10 donation, to benefit Camp Scholarship Fund; discount for those who do photos and breakfast), live entertainment including local dance studios and Mad Science, and arts and crafts, co-hosted by Newtown Parks & Recreation and The Rotary Club of Newtown; 203-270-4340.

*Garden Club of Newtown Holiday Greens Sale, 9 am- noon, Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street, local garden club will be selling decorated wreaths, kissing balls, boxwood trees, holiday centerpieces, and hand-painted tree ornaments, also book signings by celebrated author and Newtown resident Sydney Eddison, during its largest annual fundraiser.

*Holiday Gift Sale, 9:30 am-5 pm, C.H. Booth Library (lower meeting room), 25 Main Street, gift-quality books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, and other items for adults and children, continues December 8, presented by Friends of the C.H. Booth Library; 203-426-4533.

*Newtown Police Department Toys For Tots Collection, 10 am-2 pm, at TJ Maxx (228 South Main Street), Tractor Supply Company (116 South Main Street) and The Toy Tree (14 Church Hill Road), local police officers will be accepting donations for this year’s Toys For Tots campaign.

*CVH Animal Sanctuary Holiday Shop, 12-4 pm, Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary office, 83 South Main Street Gifts and holiday surprises for animal lovers, proceeds to benefit Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, event continues December 8; cvhfoundation.org.

*18th Annual Sandy Hook Tree Lighting, 4-7 pm, Sandy Hook Center, Church Hill Road at Washington Avenue, meet Santa (5 to 6 pm), enjoy karaoke and caroling, tree lighting at 6, bring donation for FAITH Food Pantry and be entered into raffle to light one of two trees, also special offerings by nearby businesses, hosted by Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity.

Sunday, December 8

*34th Newtown Holiday Festival: A Frozen Winter Wonderland, 11 am-4 pm, Main Street locations including Booth Library, Edmond Town Hall, Trinity Episcopal Church and private homes, $15 adults/advance ($18 day of), $13 seniors/advance ($15), $8 ages 2-14/advance ($10), free ages 2 and under, $30 Family Four-Pack/advance ($36), raffle of decorated trees, wreaths, decorative objects (at library, begins December 7), house tours, Edible Creations Display & Competition, trolley tours, holiday tea, Nutcracker Suite performances (noon & 2 pm), children’s events including Sing-Along with Elsa & Anna (11 am), photos with Elsa & Anna (noon-1 pm), cookie decorating (1-3 pm), ice cream with Olaf (2 pm), and more, presented by and fundraiser for Newtown Youth & Family Services; 203-270-4335, newtownyouthandfamilyservices.org.

*Newtown Historical Society Holiday Open House, noon-4 pm, The Matthew Curtiss House, 44 Main Street, free, circa 1750 dwelling that serves as historical society’s headquarters will have traditional holiday decorations, live music by tenor Tim McKee, costumed docents leading tours and answering questions, light refreshments; 203-426-5937, newtownhistory.org.

*FUN December gathering, 3-5:30 pm, Newtown High School cafetorium, 12 Berkshire Road, parents invited to join Families United in Newtown members for socializing, while student volunteers lead holiday fun (music, dancing, food, crafts, Santa visits, and more) for young adults and childcare for children, reservations requested; 203-512-6284, lindajones9763@sbcglobal.net.

*Newtown Choral Society Holiday Concert, 4 pm, Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street, $10 adults, $8 seniors and ages 12 and under, Director Mary Andreotta, with accompanist Susan Anthony-Klein, will lead choir in performance of Matthew Harris’s “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” featuring tenor John Sullivan, also songs and carols from the season, including Hollywood and Broadway selections and classical selections; 203-426-3769.

*Tenth Annual Hawleyville Tree Lighting & Toy Drive, 5:30 pm, Barnabas Plaza, 23 Barnabas Road, gather at plaza for performance by Dance Etc students, pizza from Papa Al’s Pizza, also hot chocolate and cookies, arrival of Santa and Mrs Claus on Hawleyville Fire truck, then lighting of tree, donations of toys requested for The Newtown Fund.

Joan Tiganella puts the final touches on a tabletop sleigh she used to decorate the historic home at 27 Main Street on December 4, ahead of this weekend’s 34th Newtown Holiday Festival. Six homes will be open to the public on Sunday during the largest annual fundraiser for Newtown Youth & Family Services.
