Failure To Appear

Dan Czaplicke, 29, of Timbermill Road in Sandy Hook, was arrested Tuesday after turning himself in on a warrant for failure to appear in court. Mr Czaplicke was originally arrested August 15 on a charge of driving while intoxicated, operating under a suspended license, evading responsibility and a second failure to appear in court offense.

He was being held on a $5,000 bond pending a court hearing this week.

Car Chase

Frank Sweeney, 46, of 9 Sand Hill Road, faces numerous charges after leading Newtown Police on a car chase last Friday morning.

According to police, Mr Sweeney was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed and swerving as he approached a construction area along Route 6. Officer Louis Ferreira, who was directing traffic, attempted to stop the car, but the driver sped through the officer’s signal. Officer Ferreira then radioed to Officer Ray Thompson who was stationed at the other end of the construction area. He, too, attempted to stop the driver, but the car gained speed and nearly hit Officer Thompson as it sped by. The officer was thrown to the ground and his left arm was slightly injured when it struck the passing car’s mirror. However, Officer Thompson jumped in a nearby patrol car and engaged in pursuit. After a three mile chase, the officer managed to pull Mr Sweeney over, only to have him speed off again. This happened twice before the suspect’s car was finally forced off the road.

Mr Sweeney was arrested and charged with DWI, reckless driving, evading responsibility, endangering an officer in pursuit, and operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to obey the signals of a police officer. He was released on a $1,500 bond with a promise to appear in court December 16

Officer Thompson was treated for a contusion to his hand and forearm and a shoulder strain.

DWI On Mt Pleasant

Police arrested a Bethel man Saturday and charged him with driving under the influence.

Joseph Ruzz, 41, of 80 Plumtrees Road, Bethel, was seen traveling northbound on Mount Pleasant Road when he vehicle crossed over the yellow line. Upon stopping, the officer detected an odor of alcohol on the suspect’s breath.

After failing field sobriety tests, Mr Ruzz was placed under arrest. He was released on a written promise to appear in court December 14.

 

Evading Responsibility

 Craig Hensal, 34, of 21 Philo Curtis Road, Newtown, was charged with evading responsibility Sunday after backing his 1993 black Ford F-150 into a freestanding garage at 84 Waterview Drive. Police said Mr Hensal left the scene without notifying the owner of the mishap.

He was given a misdemeanor summons to appear in court December 14.

 

Bad Check

Gina Juliano, 34, of 1 Fourth Park Road, Milford, turned herself in to police headquarters Tuesday after allegedly issuing a bad check at Eye Care Plus in Newtown.

She was released on a written promise to appear in court December 21.

 

Speeding On Elm Drive

Larry C. Logel, 49, of Gage Road, Brewster, NY, faces a handful of motor vehicle charges after being stopped for speeding on Elm Drive December 2.

In addition to traveling at excessive speed, Mr Logel was also charged with driving with a suspended license and operating an unregistered vehicle.

He was released on a written promise to appear in court December 14.

Three-Car Accident

Police responded to a minor three-car accident on Main Street Saturday. According to a report, Michelle King, 39, of 56 Main Street, Bridgewater, was driving a 1989 Mazda 323 when she struck the rear end of a stopped 1999 Pontiac Montana driven by Dennis Heldman, 61, of 8 Shadow Ridge Circle, Newtown. The collision forced Mr Heldman’s vehicle into the rear of the stopped 1999 Oldsmobile driven by Leigh Lincoln, 37, of 14 Old Never, Danbury.

The vehicle suffered only minor damage

Mrs King was issued a written warning for failure to travel at a safe distance.

 

Church Hill

Road Accident

Police responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Queen Street Saturday.

Police said Mykhaylo Tanchyn, 41, of 227 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook, was driving a 1986 Buick Somerset east on Church Hill Road and was looking to make a left turn into Dr Henry Gellert’s office at 23 Church Hill Road. At the same time, Christopher Sullivan, 48, of 10 Walnut Tree Hill Road, Sandy Hook, was driving his 1997 Jeep Cherokee west as it approached the intersection. As Mr Sullivan attempted to enter the intersection, the two cars collided.

Mr Sullivan complained of minor pain to his rib area but refused to be transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

 

Route 302 Accident

Police responded to a one-car accident along Route 302 at 9:57 pm Saturday. There were no injuries. According to a report, Jose R. Osorio, 31, of 272 Harriet Street, Bridgeport, was traveling along Route 302 when a red pick-up truck passed him, causing his 1987 Ford station wagon to strike the metal beam guide rail. The pick-up truck fled the scene.

Tire Theft

 Police are seeking information on the alleged theft of four tires and rims from the garage of Lewis Gotch of Waterview Drive. The larceny occurred sometime between November 27 at 1:30 pm and Tuesday at 5:15 pm. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 426-5841.

Car vs Phone Pole

Cheryl McGrath, 40, of 92 Underhill Road, Sandy Hook, was charged with DWI Sunday after her 1998 Astrovan struck a telephone pole at the intersection of Underhill Road and a private driveway. She had been traveling south on Center Street at the time of the accident.

Ms McGrath was released on a written promise to appear in court December 16.
