The Board of Education (BOE) heard a number of Newtown High School updates at its meeting on November 16 thanks to one of its two student representatives, Matt Irving.

For each Board of Education regular meeting the students share updates about the high school. Their participation at meetings officially began on September 21. Student representative Christina Savo was not present for the latest meeting.

Matt started his update by saying, “First off a big congratulations to the Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard for winning state championships. I just want to say, I think everyone at school is very proud to have such an outstanding program.”

He also shared “congratulations” to the NHS Field Hockey team for winning the South West Conference title.

“We have a lot of great things going on right now,” said Matt.

He also noted that the high school’s fall drama production of Puffs, Or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years At A Certain School Of Magic And Magic, was staged November 18 to 21.

“They and we are so excited to have live theater once again,” said Matt.

In other high school news, Matt said the high school is already preparing for its spring musical, which will be Footloose.

There was also a recent “penny wars” effort to fundraise for future school events and Pencils of Promise, a nonprofit organization that supports education around the world.

Matt also mentioned the high school’s Veterans Day ceremony, which invited veterans to attend the day’s event, which was hosted with American Legion Post 202.

Students are working on the submissions for the PTA Reflections art contest, which has an “I will change the world by” theme this year, according to Matt.

The high school also recently hosted a spirit week and advanced placement government classes are holding mock elections.

“Fall sports are coming to a close. Every sport but girls swim and dive and football has ended... We will start to turn to our winter sports,” Matt said, concluding his report.
