A system of mixed precipitation and temperatures hovering around the freezing mark Tuesday morning has led to schools being closed for the day. Other entities are opening late, or also staying closed for the day.

The Newtown High School Chorus Winter Concert scheduled for tonight will instead be moved to its snow date of Thursday, December 19.

FAITH Food Pantry will be closed today, according to a post on its Facebook page. The next open session for the nondenominational food pantry on Church Hill Road will be Thursday evening, December 19, from 6 to 7:30 pm.

Newtown Community Center announced a delayed opening of 8 am. Classes before noon have all been canceled. Classes and programs after 4:30 pm have also been canceled due to the expectation that freezing temperatures are expected to continue into the evening.

Newtown Youth & Family Services was planning on opening at noon today. The agency announced shortly after 11 that it would remain closed for the day, however.

EverWonder Children's Museum is closed for the day.

C.H. Booth Library will open at 11:30, two hours later than usual.

In an email to The Newtown Bee, Library Director Douglas Lord said the delayed opening comes "due to weather conditions and out of an abundance of caution for our staff and patrons.

"We encourage folks to enjoy a book," he added.

fisio Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC has announced it will be closed for the day.

The Resiliency Center of Newtown will be closed.

The office of Newtown Congregational Church, UCC will also be closed. NCC staff will be working from home, and monitoring the church voicemail. Tonight's NCC Core Leadership meeting has been canceled.

Tuesday night's Public Building & Site Commission meetings have been canceled.

(The Economic Development Commission meeting also scheduled for Tuesday evening was canceled last week.)

Light rain and freezing rain/sleet continues to fall across the region this morning. A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Newtown, and the entire state, due to freezing rain with temperatures at or slightly below freezing. The Advisory will remain active until at least 10 am; it had initially been announced on Monday as being in effect until 6 pm tonight.

A four-vehicle accident on I-84 East around 8:15 am closed the highway. Responding firefighters reported minor injuries to those involved, but also reported that one vehicle was off the roadway and another was "sideways."

The highway is closed until State DOT vehicles can sand the area, and the vehicles involved in the accident can be towed from the scene.

The weather service Tuesday morning announced that the "multi-faceted winter storm, from the past few days, will sweep through the East today. A swath of wintry precipitation of snow, sleet and freezing rain will affect areas from the Ohio Valley to parts of the Northeast and New England."

As shown on this National Weather Service map, a Winter Weather Advisory covers the entire state, as well as sections of New York and New Jersey. —National Weather Service graphic
