Youth Basketball Highlights From The Hardwood

Youth boys’ and girls’ basketball highlights from this past week:

Girls

Midgets

Ferocious Sunflowers: Offense was led by Jenna Gonski and Sarah Widmann and the defense was led by Megahn Leblanc and Karsen Pirone. Firecrackers: Offense was led by Caroline Stubbs and Ally Tolson. The defense was led by Brianna Giglio and Annabel Terry.

Blue Monkeys: The offense was led by Shauna Tucker and Adeliade Meier. The defense was led by Carli Carpenter and Virginia Hepp. Celtics: The offense was led by Shannon Jackman and Kaitlyn King and the defense was paced by Tess Davenport and Anna Burns.

Cheese Doodles: The offense was paced by Jenna Lavelle and Kim Buttery and the defense was led by Carlie Smith and Angela Vodola. Purple People Eaters: The offense was led by Kristen Cirone and Lauren Adams and the defense was led by Savannah Lafferiere and Angela Carriero.

Grade 5

Newtown’s grade 5 travel basketball team defeated New Milford 41-17 and Westport 30-12. Nikki Zaccarro had 9 points Ally Idelicato 8 points and Megan Goyda had 8 points, and Jillian Pieretti and Meghan Doyle played stellar defense. Kamdynn Moroney and Goyda pulled down 5 and 10 rebounds respectively. In the second game Megan Goyda led all scorers with 14 points and Jillian Pieretti and Nikki Zaccarro add 4 points each. Pieretti, Meghan Doyle and Jessica Maturo kept Westport to 12 points with constant pressure on defense.

Grade 6

Newtown 29, Stamford 25: Newtown held off a strong comeback to secure the victory. Lauren Wilcox lead all scorers with 8. Casey Harkins had 4 assists and Haley Ryan dropped in 6 points. Maren Brady ripped 8 rebounds and Caitlin Linden added 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Newtown 40, Brookfield 26: Katie Reilly scored double digits and Katie Mossbarger chipped in 5 assists to lead Newtown. Kelly Merrick hit her first 3 pointer of her career. Alana Murray and Lindsay Hoyt combined for 7 points and 3 steals

Boys

Grade 2

Huskies: Excellent performances by Keenan Murphy, Nathan Bellagamba, Joe Rios, Liam Murphy, Jack Lydon, and Dillon Robinson.

Celtics: Excellent performances by Ethan Shaffer, Shaine Luzietti, Darren Huffman and Kevin Gong.

Warriors: Eamon Doherty played tenacious defense, Luke Wellman had fantastic outside shooting, Patrick Grover had outstanding interior shooting, Max Wrage had precise passing, Nathan Stewart showed exceptional hustle and teamwork, and Justin Engler attacked the basket with authority

Strikers: Outstanding offensive players: James Mok and Sean McKinley. Outstanding defensive players: Matthew Bradbury and Luke Azzarito.

Wolverines: Offensive players of the week: Atilla Sepkin and Sam Eppers. Defensive players of the week: JP Ford and Nick Hobar.

Orange Crush: Excellent performances by Luke Hannan, Kieran Coffey, Tucker Depoy, William Archiere, James Tibolla, and Andrew Tomasino.

Grade 3

Red Heat vs Slimers: Bobby Elston, Carter Mcleary, Danny Schreiber, and Morgan Main led a balanced Red Heat attack while Ryan Burns, Trevor Bottom and Logan Flynn anchored the defense with solid rebounding. The Slimers’ offensive attack responded with Derrick Lewis, Chris Maturo, and Jack Hannan coupled with a stifling defense led by Brandon Giglio, Kyle Cascone, and Thomas Hartley on the boards.

Magic vs Ghostbusters: The Magic was led by Thomas Briscoe, Andres Schnelle, and Thomas Luciano on offense, while Gavin Connors, Michael Sheridan and Griffin Cross led a stingy defense. The Ghostbusters countered with an offensive attack led by Garrett Norberg, James Doyle, and Tyler Clure and on defense Tucker Garrity, Brennan Mayer, and Michael Arena played well.

Gray Squirrels (opposing team highlights not reported): The offense was anchored by Harry Lucas and Liam Creeden, while Ben Nowacki on the glass, and Timmy McCarthy, were solid defensively.

Grade 4 Bantams

Fire Dragons 21, Thrill  18: Aidan Ford had 6 points for the Dragons. Jack Vaughan  had 3 assists while Adam Wolf had 9 boards and Christian Lestik had 4 steals. Ethan Aug had 8 points for the Thrill while Joshua Dunn had 6 assists, Bobby Ward and Grant Moxham played an outstanding defensive game.   

Skyhawks 24, Bullsharks 21: Brian Montoya and Thomas Skrelja combined for 14 points. Matt Principi was all over the ball with 5 steals and Dwyer Grimes  had 7 rebounds. Bullsharks was led by John Finnegan with 8 points and Jamie Hobar with 7 points. Ryan Mailloux had 4 assists, Tim Shaw had 5 steals and Riley Burns had 8 rebounds

Dark Knights  24, Wildcats  22: Knights were led by Chris Daubert with 8 points and Dylan Champagne with 6 points. Tom Coppinger  had 5 assists, Cameron Champagne had 6 steals and Owen Rahr had 6 rebounds. Jake Pirone and Jacob Duffy combined for 14 points for the Wildcats while Marc Carlson had  5 assists and Mckinley Seaver had 8 boards.

Hotshots  28, Panthers 23: Hotshots were led by high-scoring duo of Evan Eggleston with 12 points and Cole Demirjian with 14. Ryan Williams had  5 assists  while  Liam Deakin had an outstanding all-around game. The Panthers  were led on offense by Silas Decker with 8 points while Teddy Wojcik and Danny Fore played outstanding defense. Rick Mariani had 8 steals and Nick Harper had 6 boards.

Hotshots 26, Huskies  22: Matt Sadowski and Liam Deakin combined for 12 points for the Hotshots while Shane Powers had 3 assists. Kevin Riccardi had 8  rebounds and Jermane Anyoha had 4 steals. For the Huskies, Adam Farley had 9 points and Andrew Deluca had 7 points. Owen Walsh led the defense and Nate Jones had 7 rebounds.

Grade 5

Blues Brothers 22, March Madness 21 (OT): Robert Lombardo led all scorers with 9 points to lead the Blues Brothers for the second straight game. Offensive player of the game Will Huegi made a clutch free throw with only 3 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 21 and then followed that up with another one in overtime, finishing with 7 points overall. Peter Clifford had 3 points, 3 assists and 5 steals while defensive player of the game Nicoloas Lombardo chipped in with 2 points and had 4 steals and 1 blocked shot. For March Madness Connory Mayer, 7 points, Chad Azzaritto, 4 points, and Jordan Klein, 4 points, provided the offensive punch, while William Gottschalk, Chris Anesi and Elliott Bennett led a great defensive effort.

The Lightning 36, Blue Devils 11: The Lightning was led by Stephen Moccio with 13 points and Mike Liberante added another 10 points. Kevin Arther, Bradley Wiseman and Matthew Frazzetta also added to the score and provided solid defense on the boards. The Blue Devils were led by Nicholas Lansing with 4 points and Noah LaFerriere with 3 points. Will LeMay, Jack Palermo and Justin Gillespie provided a combined 8 rebounds.

Green Monster 30, Tigers 23: Paul Whiteker led the way with 7 points while Henry Primavera scored 5, Chris Mok had 5 steals, and Matt Kegler had 8 rebounds, a great defensive effort by the whole team. William Corbett scored 10 points to lead the Tigers. Austin Kasbarian added 6 points and 8 rebounds.  Gregg Trimarchi and Quinlan Hart played solid defense giving the Tigers 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Destiny 27, Dawgs 14: Owen McInerney led with 10 points followed by Dylan Kretz with 7 points. Ryan Brello had 7 assists, Patrick Flynn had 6 steals, and Cameron Mitchell led the way in rebounds, good team play all the way around. The Dawgs were led by Tommy Kitzmiller. Adam Beckett had 4 points. Peter DeBona and Matthew Kretz had a strong games.

Grade 6

East Haven 56, Newtown 39: Ethan Carpenter, Dillon Palumbo, Jared Pearson, and Matt Gerics all scored 8 points. Josh Houle and Devon Luzietti were strong on defense.

Newtown 68, Westport PAL 62: Michael Doyle scored 16 points. Matt Gerics made 5 steals and scored 10 points. Jared Pearson was strong on the boards and scored 10 points. Dillon Palumbo and Jamie Cochrane had a hot outside game, scoring 9 points each.Devon Luzietti, Joey Duero and Andrew Svanda played strong defense.

Celtics 38, Wolfpack 26: Stephen Brittin led the Celtics with 10 points followed closely by teammates James Carney and Jack Procaccini each with 8 points. Matthew St Jean sparked the defense with support from Jake Oliger and Kyle Keeping contributing steals and rebounds. Robert Katrinak led the Wolfpack with 10 points and got assist support from Michael O’Keefe. Jimmy Craig and Sam Czel anchored the defense with solid rebounding from James Buck.

Hurricanes 38, Thunder 32: Colin Patrick led the Hurricanes scoring with 10 points and James Accousti added 8 points. Matt Meyers made some key steals on defense as Sam Duffy pulled down eight rebounds helping the Hurricanes jump out to a 2-0 start on the season. Christian Thanasoulis scored 15 points to lead the Thunder, and Thomas Gavel played well. Kevin Chernoff led the defensive charge with John Cagganello and Spencer Johnson battling on the boards to keep this one close.

Magic 41, Huskies 35: Nicholas Samuelson led all scorers for the Magic with 18 points, hitting shots from all over the court with great from Lucas Ladestro and Hunter Booker. Maxim Donaher had four steals and Markus Wessel pulled down five rebounds. Nicholas Bourgeois scored 8 points to lead the Huskies with Gordon Walsh and Declan Sullivan each adding 6 points. Tommy Elliott, Holden Turk and John Delrossi each had five rebounds with Adam Weber getting four steals to lead the defense for the Huskies.

Grades 7-8

Heat 40, Magic 32: Jack Lago and Matt White combined for 29 points to lead the Heat. Jeff Peterson and Kyle McGrath had good all around games. For the Magic, Riley Cross led the scoring with 16 points while Brian Raab,  Bobby  Schreiber and Mitchel Stewart had strong games.

X-Men 35, Runnin’ Rebels 24: For the X-Men David Csordas and Michael Dinelli combined for 14 points and Keaton McCleary, Brennan O’Sullivan and Greg La Russa had strong games. The Runnin Rebels were led by Jimmy Leidlein with 9 points.

Wolfpack 32, Huskies 27 (OT): Virgil Procaccini led the Wolfpack with 13 points while Alex Romeo and Jason Ferrari had strong games. For the Huskies, Bryce Decker led the scoring with 8 points Owen Gaston had 3 assists and Cameron Partrick and Nadimal Haque led the defense.

Jazz 31, Eagles 17: For the Jazz Otto Kerler led the scoring with 16 points, Kyle Gordon led the defense and Harry Depuy had 11 rebounds. The Eagles were led by Pat Peirce with 7 points with strong games by Zach Bergeron, Dave Corsi and Sean Kemsley.

Bricklayers 39, Wizzards 34: Connor LeMay led the bricklayers’ offense with 12 points, Patrick Afriyie had 9 points, Brenton Scott, Kaustav Mitra and Andrew King had strong games. For the Wizzards, Brian Armold had 10 points. Adam Israel, Mike Unschuld and Deegen Beauchemin a good games.

Cavs 47, Celtics 29: The Cavs were led by Drew Tarantino with 15 points. Nick Norberg controlled the boards with 12 rebounds. Mathew Hess, Tommy Catalina and Mat Wood led the defense. Tim Kelly paced the Celtics with 14 points. The defense was led by Jon Sherman and Matt Baldino.

Wildcats 49, Thunder 23: All around effort on offense by the Wildcats led by Kaj Djonne with 10 points. Solid contributions by Patrick Berger, Austin Babyak, Pat Rowley and Jordan Sock. The Thunder was led by Wiley Zahansky with 7 points. The defense was led by Doug Miller and Cameron Eiseman.

Nuggets 47, Hammerheads  27: Wesley Morlock led the attack for the Nuggets with 14 points and was assisted by CJ Dunn with 10 points. Matt Janco, Danny Winn and Carl Whippie played tough defense. For the Hammerheads Spencer Brindley led the offense with 14 points.

Vipers 41, Thunder 34: Shay DeMarche led the Vipers with 18 points with Stephen Grasso adding 13 points. Constantine Gregoire led the defense. For the Thunder, Zach Weiland and Doug Miller scored 10 points each while the defense was led by Wiley Zahansky and Doug Miller
