With winter weather settling in, State Sen John McKinney (R-28), State Representatives Mitch Bolinsky (R-106), DebraLee Hovey (R-112), and Dan Carter (R-2), along with Newtown’s Social Services Department, are holding a food drive in the month of January to benefit Newtown families in need.

Newtown’s Social Services Department has a significant need for food donations year around and especially during the winter months. The department oversees programs for town residents, such as the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, Operation Fuel, Renters Rebate program for the elderly and disabled, and The Salvation Army Emergency Food Pantry.

Boxes will be at the following locations for food donations:

Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street;

Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street; and

C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

Nonperishable items are requested. Items always needed include soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, tomato products, cleaning supplies, personal products, dog and cat food, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, school snacks, and juice boxes.

“The timing couldn’t be better,” said Rep Bolinsky, a resident of Newtown. “While so many of us are reflecting on our blessings this time of year, others among us are not as fortunate.”

“During the colder months it’s important to remember those less fortunate, and to give what we can to make their lives a little easier,” Rep Hovey said. “I’m honored to join my colleagues and Newtown Social Services to continue a tradition of collecting and distributing food to those in need and urge everyone to donate whatever amount they can spare. Even a small donation means a lot to a family with less.”

“Any food donation, no matter how small, will make a big difference to Newtown’s families and seniors who are in need this holiday season,” said Rep Carter. “I hope you’ll join us in helping out the folks in our community who could really use some extra support.”

“I am grateful for the efforts of the Newtown Social Services Department,” said Sen McKinney. “Winter months in Connecticut are especially trying times for individuals and families who don’t have the food and shelter they need. This is a great opportunity to come together as a community to support our neighbors in need.”
