Newtown/Sandy Hook awoke to a wet — not a white — and dark Christmas Day, December 25, after heavy overnight rains dissolved any remainders of last week’s snow and wind gusts took down trees and wires in areas of town, leaving over 3,000 outages reported to Eversource power company by 6:30 am, Friday.

That number was down to somewhat over 1,000 customers without power by late morning, and many had Christmas lights aglow again by 3 pm. However, 600-plus remained looking forward to a dark and very cold night ahead, as temperatures dipped into the low 20s Friday night.

By Saturday at 9:30 am, just under 200 outages continued to be assessed by Eversource, with several of those estimates still noting a return to power not until 11:45 pm on Saturday night.

The Municipal Center remains closed for the weekend, and will not be open for charging of devices or as a warming center.

Report any further power outages and find more information at www.eversource.com. Call 211 or visit 211.org if emergency assistance is needed.
