Thunder Rolls To District Title
Newtownâs 10-year-old Cal Ripken Baseball team, the Thunder, won the district tournament this past week. Tourney results are as follows:
Thunder 11, Southbury Storm 1: Lucas OâBrien pitched three solid innings and Jason Hebner finished the Storm off in a one-sided affair. Connor Barrett scored two runs and drove in three, and Sam Grossano had a hit and scored twice. Ben Dieckman, Ryan Kost, Colby Olson, and Will Huegi also made great contributions.
Thunder 4, Southbury Storm 2: Adam Bergeron shut down the Storm the final two innings to pick up the save for OâBrien. OâBrien also homered into the seats in left field. Owen McInerney picked up where he left off in his opening game hitting barrage by scoring two runs. Nick Venezia starred in the field and Ben Harrison, the sportsmanship winner, played flawless defense behind the plate. OâBrien won the MVP Award for Tom Harrisonâs team.
Newtown Thunder next plays in the State tournament in Danbury at Rogers Park on Saturday, July 10 at 3 pm as the Thunder will defends its state crown.
