Shoppers Beat Santa To St Rose Christmas Craft Fair
(with photos)
BY DOROTHY EVANS
Santa's sleigh might have been stuck in snow and ice on I-84, but Newtowners
and out-of-towners alike were lined up outside the doors when the St Rose
Christmas Craft Fair, now in its 11th year, finally opened at 10 am Saturday,
one day late.
An early season storm had caused a school closing on Friday, November 14, "but
we picked up Sunday instead," said school principal Donna DeLuca, who refused
to see the mug of eggnog as anything but half full.
Certainly the families that crowded into the school and Parish Hall on
Saturday and Sunday did not seem fazed by the delay.
They admired the professional craftsmen's wares and did some early Christmas
shopping when a particular item proved irresistible. The children enjoyed
having their faces painted, eating pizza and buying grab bags that had been
filled by St Rose parents with mystery gifts.
"It's a big fund-raiser, our biggest except for the Gala Auction we plan to
hold in the spring," Mrs DeLuca said Saturday.
"People remember our Christmas Fair from the past. I had calls early this
morning from families in several different towns wanting to know about it.
"We're getting a reputation," she added.
Funds raised by the Craft Fair will be used throughout the year to boost St
Rose School programs.
