Yale University’s Whiffenpoofs Returning By Popular Demand

RIDGEFIELD — On Sunday, November 4, at 4 pm, the Whiffenproofs of Yale University will appear in concert at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 351 Main Street/Route 35. Admission to the one-hour concert is free; donations are invited.

Founded in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs are the oldest collegiate a cappella singing group in America. While a cappella singing has spread to colleges across the country, the Whiffenpoofs remain the nation’s premier undergraduate men’s chorus.

Each year, 14 senior Yale men, selected for their outstanding vocal ability, are chosen to continue the Whiffenpoof tradition. On annual world tours they have delighted audiences from Nantucket to Hong Kong and have performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as for such public figures as Presidents Clinton and Bush, and the Dalai Lama. The group was a special guest of the Ridgefield church just over one year ago, in October 2000.

The Whiffenpoofs present a wide and varied repertoire, ranging from fast jazz (“Too Darn Hot”) to melodic ballads (“Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”) to selections from musical theater (“On Broadway”) to blues (“Midnight Train to Georgia”). Composers represented include Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Stephen Sondheim, whose works are then arranged by past and present members of the Whiffenpoofs.
