Hawleyville Woman Charged

In 17 Mail Thefts

By Andrew Gorosko

Newtown police have charged a Hawleyville woman with 17 individual counts of sixth degree larceny in connection with her alleged theft of mail from 17 different residential addresses in town between last October and January.

Newtown police said they charged Caroline Eckert, 28, of 17 Old Hawleyville Road on a court-issued arrest warrant on March 9 listing the offenses. Sixth degree larceny involves the theft of items worth less than $250. Eckert also has been charged in connection with mail thefts from two adjacent towns.

On February 11, Easton police charged Eckert on a warrant listing 29 counts of sixth degree larceny in connection with mail thefts in that town between last October and January. Easton police also had charged Eckert on January 8 on a warrant listing one count of sixth degree larceny.

On January 8, Easton police arrested Eckert after they spotted her driving her 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit on Sport Hill Road. Easton police have said that on inspecting the vehicle they found apparently stolen mail inside which belonged to 29 Easton residents, 17 Newtown residents, and one Redding resident. Easton police have said that Eckert stole mail, including a check, from a residential mailbox in Easton, after which she cashed that stolen check at a Newtown bank.

Redding police also have charged Eckert with larceny in connection with mail theft there, Newtown police said.

After arresting Eckert on the 17 larceny counts on March 9, Newtown police released her on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on March 11 to answer the charges.

“The arrest stems from an investigation which began in Easton when (Eckert) was found in possession of delivered and undelivered mail from 17 different addresses in Newtown,” Newtown police added.

Newtown police said the mail thefts occurred from mailboxes located on Boggs Hill Road, Washbrook Road, Wiley Road, Hattertown Road, Head O’ Meadow Road, Eden Hill Road, Farrell Road, Pocono Road, Platts Hill Road, Sawmill Road, Hundred Acres Road, and Aunt Park Lane.

United States postal inspectors from New Haven aided police in the overall investigation. Residents whose mail was recovered were notified.
