Outstanding Students Sought For Nicholas Green Award

WESTPORT — Do you know a Connecticut student in grades three through six who is a remarkable scholar, artist, or leader? The Connecticut Association for the Gifted (CAG) is accepting applications for nominees for the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) — Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award.

Nominations of students currently in grades three through six will be accepted from parents, teachers, students, and community and civic groups. Student self-nominations are also accepted. The official nomination form is available on the CAG website at ctgifted.org. Nominations must be postmarked no later than April 30.

The award seeks to recognize distinguished student achievement in academics, leadership and/or the arts. Each state selects one finalist who receives a $500 US Savings Bond and a Certificate of Excellence from NAGC. Each state finalist is then considered for the national award.

Last year’s Connecticut state finalist was sixth grader Colin Carlson of Coventry who is attending selected courses at the University of Connecticut, held a book drive for children in a nearby hospital when he was 7 years old, volunteers at his town library, and edits his local home-schooling newsletter, The Sapling Times.

The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their 7-year-old son Nicholas who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Greens partnered with the National Association for Gifted Children to create this award to recognize young people who are working hard to make the most of their lives and to develop their unique gifts and talents.
